So we have a Halfling life cleric of Sharess who prefers not to hurt anything…except spiders. KILL ALL OF THE SPIDERS!!!!  He is being played really well but we all feel that they player is getting bored. So my DM asked me to help think of ways to involve him more especially during combat.
Then on the way to work I had a brain wave. He needs a puppy!!!!! A big war dog mount that would improve his mobility and would also aid in defense of our squishy squishy little cleric. So I guess I am asking two things;
1.    How do mounts work? I do not have my books with me and I would like to email my DM before I am off of work today.
2.    Any other suggestions on how to engage the little guy during combat. He is also terrified of burning his spell slots and then needing them later…. :/

1: Controled mounts (horses) move on your inititive and can only use their action for dash, disingage or dodge.  Powerful mounts act on their own inititive, and use their actions and movement as they see fit.

2:  Fight spiders and spider like things.  Let him know that he will get a rest.

i.e.

Some drow are trying to break away from worshiping Lolth and want to worship Sharess instead.  They plan on holding a large festival as a comming out party.  Lolths does not approve.  One of the breakaway drow has already been found dead, their bodies used as food for spider eggs.  You need to find the assassin before it scares people away, ruining the festivities.

Well, in direct play there is always the assist or Help  action. The cleric can make distracting atatcks to grant another PC advantage on thier next attack. So the cleric "fights" with everyone else but somehow never lands a telling blow but thier efforts set up allies for better attacks.

Or you could put a curse on his character that makes him beleive anything that you are fighting is a spider.
