My apologies to everyone I've offended (probably in the hundreds by now). |
| #2AaronOfBarbariaSep 26, 2014 6:20:11 | I have to ask... did you miss the blade pact warlock? Does a monk with elemental magic not count as "warrior" or is it not "arcane" enough? Is that why you aren't open-minded and checking out how well paladins and rangers can fill the "warrior-mage" archetype, because they aren't explicitly "arcane"?
Those questions aside... that's too many eldritch blasts - rolling out 12 attacks every round (or more if you have benefit of the haste spell) is ludicrous. |

| #4ZyphSep 26, 2014 7:02:10 | Blade-Pact Warlock, Valor Bard, and Elemental Monk are all additional forms of "arcane warrior".
Spellsword is RIDICULOUSLY overpowered. At level 11 you'd be making SIX attacks a round. That's two more I believe than a 20th level fighter. At best "Spellsword" should function like the Valor Bard or Eldritch Knight abilities that allow you to cast a cantrip as a bonus action when you make a SINGLE weapon attack. The only decently balancing thing is you're not giving them any invocations so those eldritch blasts aren't getting charisma bonus to damage.
With "Master Blaster" you're giving them TWELVE ATTACKS a round at level 20. And since that's a level 18 ability they can take the two level of warlock to get their charisma bonus added. That's potentially 12d10+60 a round over and over and over again.
Just no...multiple times no. |

| #6VikingkingqSep 26, 2014 8:00:13 | Let me see:
Eldritch Knight Blade Pact Warlock Draconic Sorceror (more of an edge case than it was in the playtest, but still) Ranger Valor Bard Elemental Monk Totem Warrior Barbarian
Seems like more than 1 to me.

| #7TimboramaSep 26, 2014 8:24:42 | While not strictly arcane, are you seriously just ignoring a fluffed-up Paladin and Ranger?
And is an Arcane Trickster or Pact Blade Warlock not Warriory enough for you...?
Is an Elemental Monk not Arcane enough...?
Is Eldritch Knight the actual "ONE AND ONLY!" class you were thinking of...?
That's not even counting the (almost) countless "builds" you can do to make one using the rules as-is with Multiclassing... |
| #8souldoubtSep 26, 2014 8:38:29 | Okay, I came here thinking this would be a thread about the blade pact warlock... which is what the hexblade is in this edition.
That said, I like the concept of a warlock-y arcane subclass for fighter. I just don't think your implementation is entirely sound. |
| #9SkyrenderSep 26, 2014 22:23:24 | You're right, my original post was ridiculous. I surrender. |
| #10Luis_CarlosSep 26, 2014 11:40:27 | How do I imagine the 5th hexblade? Like a mixture of 3.5 hexblade and swordsage from "Tome of Battle: Book of Nine Swords".
This hexblade had got the power to curse or mark the enemy (sucessfull attack is enough). With a sucessfull attack in the next rounds, the enemy suffer extra effects (for example the damage reduction is nulificied). |
| #11TimboramaSep 26, 2014 11:53:26 | So...do gods of magic not exist...? Magic is neither philosophical nor an ideal/ideology? Or do they make less sense to you than natural forces and elements of nature? And what does that say about your ideals and Warlocks?
Edit: Actually, nevermind, don't answer that...I'll just move along |
| #12Slyck314Sep 26, 2014 11:50:40 | Mountain Dwarf Abjurer, stated out like a tanky fighter, no attack rolls or saves needed. Spend his first feat the weapon proficiency feat. |
| #13ChrisCarlsonSep 26, 2014 12:12:26 | Now I'm soooo glad I resisted replying to the OP...
[quietly backs away] |
| (Reply to #9)Skyrender | I withdraw the suggestion. |
| #15melloredSep 26, 2014 12:24:00 | Warlocks are not weak. They can get their spells back durring a short rest, and have alot of at-will options. Bards are also not weak. Though they are somewhat squishy. Wizards are not nearly as squishy as they used to be. Though, they arn't as powerful either. Ranger's don't pray.
You can also simply start off as a fighter 1 for the armor and Con saves, then multiclass wizard. |
| #16AhrimonSep 26, 2014 13:20:04 | I think that you need to work on your acceptance of re-fluffing. Just because the class in the book is a divine class in the book does not mean that it has to be in the game. From reading your posts you don't like anything spiritual, so don't use it. I can make a character using the paladin class, erase paladin, call it an arcane warrior and poof, no religeous connection whatsoever. No praying for spells, no divine whatsits. Just a warrior that knows X number of spells, has to meditate/study/focus his mental energies/etc to prepare his spells and go. The connection between what is in the book and what like or don't like is in your head. Just change it.
The eraser and a bit of an imagination can do wonders for someone who wants something outside the box.

| #17Eric888Sep 26, 2014 13:46:06 | I really don't understand why this conversation is going any further than pact blade warlocks. Its a hexblade. Completely 100% a hexblade. Seriously this thread would be like me designing a class that is like a fighter, only he is less civilized, can go into blinding rages, and has a more primal flare than martial; but insisting that the barbarian "just doesn't really work..."
The hexblade is already a thing. It is called the Pact of the Blade warlock. I am sorry that you don't like it. You can rename it if you want, or reflavor the Eldritch Knight fighter class, or just make it OP; but you are not filling any missing void in the game. It is right there. |

| #21AhrimonSep 26, 2014 19:45:33 | Skyrender's views aside, in the spirit of being helpful, how does this option look?
Tweak the eldritch knight as such: Replace the edlrich knight's spell list with the warlock's spell list. Keep the eldrich knikght's spells known and spell slots available. Spellcasting ability is Charisma. Add the otherworldly patron feature when you enter this subclass. Add the patron's spells to your spell list. Replace the Weapon Bond feature with the Pact of the Blade feature. Replace the 7th level War Magic ability with the 1st level Patron ability. Replace the 10th level Eldritch Strike ability with the 6th level Patron ability. Replace 15th level Arcane Charge with the 10th level Patron ability. Replace the 18th level Improved War Magic ability with the 14th level Patron ability.
All the flavor of being a bladelock with the feel of the eldrich knight.

| #22AshrymSep 27, 2014 0:19:07 | I'm not sure tweaking the eldritch knight is better than simply playing a blade pact warlock with the concept already in mind, or multi-class something up. As for arcane / combat the lists given are pretty good. Mine list would be:
Arcane trickster Beastmaster Ranger Blade Pact Warlock Eldritch Knight Elemental Monk Hunter Ranger Valor Bard
Rangers are included because they don't pray for spells and cast their spells from the essence of nature, the same as druids, according to the description. Monks are included because they also do not pray for spells and while the monasteries could be dedicated religious orders there is no connection in D&D for such, and they seem to follow more of a philosophy than religion. Ignoring religious aspect as bad allows paladins to be included and strict arcane magic still leaves 4 options and there are a lot of multiclass options available.
The OP had some misconceptions before removing his posts (I was planning on disputing the weakness of bards and warlocks too
I would have recommended fiend patron blade pact for a hexblade style warlock.

| #24thewokSep 27, 2014 10:50:44 | I've actually been poking at converting the Shadowknight from Everquest as a 5E class. I'm kind of waiting to see how the Blackguard (or whatever it's going to be called) comes out, but, in a nutshell, it would use the Paladin as a base, replacing Lay Hands with Harm Touch and replacing divine spellcasting with arcane spellcasting focusing on necromancy. I have the old D20 versions to check out, too.
It's one of my favorite classes in the games, and I like the idea of it in my campaign world. |
