| #1setiNov 24, 2014 15:49:32 | As mostly 4e players, (or players who've decided 4e is their favorite edition so far) we have decided a different take on HP/healing for 5e. We like 5e, mainly for the lower numbers, and faster combat...Also the art, and simpler character sheets.
This reduces the need for a cleric, and keeps up a less 'gritty' and more 'heroic' feel to our game.
Any other ideas?

Self-healing in combat is an action right? |
| #3setiNov 24, 2014 16:24:26 | Well, it reduces the need for a 'heal-bot' cleric....But, yeah, of course you'd still want a cleric around for other cool (and sometimes necessary) things they can do.
Yes and no; Defensive action = using your turn to spend a HD (or more, depending on level), not moving, and gaining advantage on a save or +2 to AC against a threat you can see/ prepare for. You basically lose your turn to heal and/or block.
A feat lets you use other actions and heal as well. (that feat, homebrewed, is called "Die Hard" and lets you heal by spending HD as a bonus action as long as you have HD left.) |

one option would be that when you use the cure wounds spell the target can also spend a number of his Hitdice upto the level of the spell slot used. the disadvantage of this is that it moves out of combat healing into combat, making groups very tough if they have only a few encounters in the day.
Another option would be to alouw the healer to cast the cure wounds spell twice on the same target with one action ( still expending spell slots for both castings) |

HP at level 1 = Con score plus average of your class HD (round up). Do not add Con mod to HP at each level.
Get rid of Hit Dice Healing. They are annoying.
Death Saving throws are modified by your Constituiom modifier.
After you complete a short rest, you recover to 1/2 of your maximum HP (aka your bloodied value).
After you complete a long rest, you recover all of your HP.
The net result of this: you get more HP upfront, but reduced HP scaling. Also, classes will have less HP variance. High level challenges will be deadlier due to the reduced HP at high levels. Player HP recovery will be greater, but not overwhelming. Players can use short rests to get a buffer, making adventuring days last as long as they need to. |

| #12setiNov 24, 2014 18:33:06 | (full disclosure)
I don't think 5e needs any healing changes...Aside from an optional addition of 4e-style non-religious healing. Although, to be honest, one can always reflavor a cleric at the table.
I just started this as a counter-point to the 'we need rough and gritty slow healing' thread another fellow D&D fan made. |
| #13NevvurNov 25, 2014 0:58:10 | Give everyone in-combat self healing, and you create class imbalance by devaluing the healing that already exists. Also, "This reduces the need for a cleric" reasoning is going to mean you have 'too much healing' should the day come that a cleric (or other heal bot) does join the party, complicating encounter design.
Sure, either problem can be overcome with additional modifications, or not even regarded as a problem to begin with. Yet I usually find its better to run with the system as is. I started house ruling 5e a lot from the very start. However, I found that most of these 'improvements' caused other problems down the road. Notably, the house rules that survived the purge could be explained in a single, short sentence. Ex: Wild Shape HP = normal form HP; Cantrips scale by caster level, not character level. When considering a new house rule, I often ask myself if it can be reduced thusly. If not, I'll probably pass on instating it. |
| #14LawolfNov 25, 2014 8:37:26 | In combat healing really isn't much of an issue. Most PCs have enough HP that they won't be brought to 0 in a single fight (except at low levels). The healing between combats is far more important to getting through the adventuring day.
I would put more emphasis on healing during a short rest than on healing in combat. |
