High level play seems really good, but the game is still "meh" overall.

This is my personal analysis on the game and why I think it's still just "meh".

There is nothing that really blows me away about Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition. It looks like high level play will finally be done right for a change because I don't always like crazy things going on in high level play, but I think everything is else is just "meh", feels like they played it safe this time.

I see things they could of done with this edition but didn't, spell components for one. I still think Pathfinder is the best game for levels 1-10 while 5th edition has done a good job at the higher levels. My leveling in Pathfinder is extremely slow so levels 1-10 are more like 1-20. I don't allow everything there is so the broken combos don't happen in my games. If certain options are restricted to certain regions, deities, or even certain people, then they don't make it into my games unless these things are in it.

I'm feeling like there is too much magic in 5th edition, like they are trying to solve any problems by making most of the classes have magic. I'm not crazy about the layout of the PHB. I would rather each spell had the class name or names it is associated with. Also, is it just me or do all the wee folk resemble "bobbleheads"? I feel like the system needs a bit more options without going overboard.

I'm still pouring over the PHB so I will continue to post anything else i come across.

High level play looks just as bad as it always did. Wish, teleport, reverse gravity, forcecage, contagion, wall of force, polymorph, etc all still exist. The game is still the wacky wizard show it always is at high levels.

I do agree that overall the game feels "meh". Nothing has really "wowed" me.

I can't DM Pathfinder for a long duration because the rules are so complex that I don't know what I should and shouldn't ban. A common tactic in Pathfinder among my players was to attract all the enemies and fight them at once and just massacre them. This time my players attracted all the enemies but almost lost to them.

4th ed was great at low level, but combats dragged on above level 8. Problems creeped in at the same level range but for different reasons.

5th edition so far is turning out awesome. Combats are predictably challenging. No-one seems overpowered yet, but it's early days yet. Combat options are limited but the DMG will fix that. My players keep asking about facing and it's a rule I always felt was missing from D&D.

I suspect this game will have a sweet spot. Level 1 and 2 are two hard/short in duration, high level looks to easy and will likely be boring. I at elast want to try some things out some more, PHB will get here tuesday or wednesday, I get to play LMoP on Tuesday as well and I am crafting a new campaign world for a game next Thursday and Sunday hopefully.

Martials are excellent in this edition. So are most casters. The weakest class in my opinion is sorceror in fact. Just doesnt inspire me at all. All the other classes do.

....Was this thread really needed. We have known your opinion about 5th all throughout the playtest. As far as Im concerned this edition is better than adnd in all waysexcept maybe multiclassing. It gots some old school flavor mixed with the modern editions that has become my kinda drink. And for once it looks like high level play might get used in my campaigns.

For me, so far, it's a sort of like the 3rd Ed I wanted back in August 2000.

The ease of conversion of pre-4th Ed material is a big seller.

Some people are so insecure that they feel the need to "convince" everyone agree with them.
