| #1rabiddwarfAug 07, 2014 16:19:49 | Hey guys,
Just got a glimpse of the Hoard of the Dragon Queen Module today, can't buy it yet but got to flip through it, as I am the Store's DM for encounters.
I could not help but notice that even though there is a Dragon present in the first part of the module, there is not a stat block provided for said Dragon.
Am I to guess at it's stats or possibly try to extrapolate them from the info in the existing materials from other sources/adventures? Or is this an oversight in the printing of the book? |
| #2DM_HEEGZAug 07, 2014 16:38:52 | In the Encounters document, it says that monsters for the Hoard adventure will be released tomorrow. |
| #3Xeviat-DMAug 07, 2014 19:20:15 | Wait ... you have to have the internet or the MM to get the stats for the creatures in the adventure? I really hope that's not the case. Granted, I don't now anyone who doesn't have the internet, but still ... seems weird if it's true. |

| #5DMBoboAug 08, 2014 1:01:12 | As of right now there is NO MM. It doesn't come out until next month. They released the HotDQ today. I paid $30.00 for a module I can't use because a vast majority of the monsters are not stated in the adventure and are not currently available anywhere. That is piss poor planning and a slap in the face to thier customers. Come on WotC, get your **** together. |
| #6KalaniAug 08, 2014 5:26:42 | To my knowledge, the basic rules will be updated with the HotDQ monster stats today, or early next week. Seriously - some people need to learn to have a miniscule amount of patience. |
| #7Keen_ManAug 08, 2014 5:37:30 | plus releasing it free download like that gives everyone some monsters and magic items |
| #8ShadeRavenAug 08, 2014 5:43:38 | I agree, that patience is definitely a virtue to be welcomed, but...
Let's face it, they need to make sure that the information is immediately (or near enough) available for use. You can't charge more than $20 (up to $30) for a product and not have it usable right away.
It would be like releasing the PHB but not including Class Features but, instead, making those details accessible online... well.. sometime next week.
Or buying a book to find out that prime number chapters will be available online at the publisher's earliest convenience.
I'll be picking up the HotDQ here in a little while. Hopefully, there won't be much patience involved or maybe the OP just missed someting, but even as positively spinning as I usually am, I won't be amused if the adventure is incomplete until they get around to giving us that key information down the road someday. |

| #12KalaniAug 08, 2014 6:21:18 | Please keep in mind, most printed modules from previous editions don't provide monster stat blocks either (and if they do, they are simplified stat blocks, usually lacking in important information such as ability descriptions)....
The only time a module will reliably print the stat block of a Monster/NPC is if there is significant changes to the statblock from the base creature, or if the monster is a new (original) creation... In all other cases, modules will typically assume the DM will use the monster as printed in the Monster Manual. We have 35+ years of printed modules showing this is the norm, not the exception.
5E is slightly different in that, in addition to the MM - the Dev's are publishing a free-use Basic Rules document which will be updated with all of the required monsters. They are under no obligation to do so, and could have just as easily expected you to own a copy of the Monster Manual. This is especially true once you remember that Wizards is a business, and their ultimate objective is to sell you products.
HotDQ clearly states on the cover "for the world's greatest roleplaying game" alongside the DnD logo....Most people would rightly assume that this is an expansion or supplimental product, and that the core product is required for use. |

| #19WuzzardAug 08, 2014 10:21:59 | Of course the game module is not everything you need to play the game. It is a module. You actually need the game rules to play the game too. Which can be had by downloading the free basic PDF, which sometime today will also include the additional monster stat blocks.
