Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Encounters

I am trying to confirm something as it is not clear to me from what I am reading.

 

Are the D&D Encounters and Expeditions games going to be following the published Hoard of the Dragon Queen directly or are they using a related, but different, adventure.

 

Since I might play in Encounters, I am hesitant to buy HotDQ.

The D&D Encounter version of the adventure is shorter (level 1-3) but otherwise identical.

Well that is disappointing.  I will hold off on buying it until the encounters season is over just in case I decide to join in at my local store.
