Hoard of the Dragon Queen, can't play till Monster Manual is out?

I run a home brew campaign. Picked up the Players Handbook and liked it. Frustrated that I have to wait the middle of November to get the three books I need to really play.

But I thought, Hey I can pick up the Starters Kit or the Hoard of the Dragon Queen, and at least get some DM sided stuff in terms of monsters and treasure from there.

Well, I can a little from the Starter Kit. But HotDQ, doesn't give you the monster stats for about everything. Special monsters and NPCs, yes, in the back.

So you can't use this adventure either until the last week of September, when you can get the Monster Manual.

This isn't a marketing plan I think is effective. it's not even a case I'm demanding I get everything now. But it is a case, if I pay for something, I'd like to be able to use after buying it. Reading is only part of it. A small part, since this is a game, and is meant to be played.

Am I missing something with HoDQ? Are you just meant to use the stat blocks from the play test for some of the monsters?

There is an online supplement for HotDQ http://dnd.wizards.com/products/tabletop-games/rpg-products/hoard-dragon-queen.  It contains monster stats and magic items.

I don't have it myself, but my understanding based off what others have said is that the book does direct you to the supplement, but not very clearly.

Yeah it does sound like they talk about the D&D site for "extra resources" but don't have any actual directions about the supplement (probably because they expect past November anyone who buys it will have the MM and DMG so won't need the supplement). I'm hoping though if they plan on doing these supplements for future adventures they do put in a bit clearer text to check out that adventure's page on the official D&D site for any supplements.

The adventure module specifically says that monsters and magic items are in an online supplement.  It directs you to dungeonsanddragons.com but not the exact file. I'm guessing when they wrote the adventure, monster math was not done yet.

I'm glad they didn't waste page count on information that will become redundant.  Giving away the online supplement wise a good solution.

Sorry don't know which online supplement you are speaking of but my version of the Tyranny online supplement has all the creatures to run the encounters.

Yes they do need clarification for the supplements.  You are not the only one who has had this issue. Glad you got your stuff. The adventure is great with the right tweaking.
