[Homebrew] Stats/Feats Replacement

Objectives:

1) Create more variety in stats than the cookie-cutters that come out of point-buy or stat array, but without the variance in pure dice rolling. And eliminate "dump stats".

2) Make the opportunity cost of raising your prime stat to 20 as quickly as possible more...interesting.

3) Don't force a trade-off between Feats and ability increases.  I love Feats and hate that little min-maxing voice inside me that tells me to bump a stat instead.

So....

Initial Stats: Hybrid Random Roll with Point Buy

1) Roll stats in order, 3d6.  Seriously old school.

2) Now use Point Buy to increase stats, with 12 points to spend.  Cost is 1 per point to 13, then 2 per point to 17, then 3 per point to 20. (Statistically 3d6 plus 12 points to spend averages out to equivalence to current Point Buy system.)

3) Apply racial bonuses

Leveling

1) At every level you get one stat point to spend or save.  Costs are the same as at character creation, though.  So it will take 3 levels to get a stat from 19 to 20.

2) At current Attribute Increase levels you get a Feat, no ability score increase.  Replace +1 increases to a stat with +1 point toward that stat.

Notes:

1) May want a cap at level 1, 15 or 16

2) Yes, this doesn't make Feats as "optional" as in the current rules.  But, seriously...who plays without Feats?  If you do, then this homebrew isn't for you.

Thoughts?

Serious question (although I like what you've got), why not both?

How out-of-whack is it to give both stat boosts and feats? What kind of difficulty adjustments (if so inclined) would be appropriate?

Well the big problem is the distribution since feats were obviously designed to be an expansion of the attribute increase system, to the point that many of the weaker feats incorporate an attribute boost to make up for it, and unlike 3e where there was a core progressin of feats and ability ups that some classes could add onto, 5e has your core progression in these things as part of your class.

This makes things a bit complex. For example the OP's system appears to punish fighters by forcing them to either have less ability score points than other classes or choose the weak feats that have ability score bonuses incorporated. I don't think that was the intent but the language is a bit murky.

Now if you want feats and attribute points the standard feats enabled rule allows for players to mix and match, not to mention feats with stat boosters (though those can be kinda limited).

IF you want more of one the other or both, you're best off installing a progression directly into character level like how feats and ability ups were handed out in 3e since screwing with the ones handed out by the classes is liable to get messy.
