Honor and Sanity

I like both of these concepts, but I'm not sure if I agree with the way they've been implemented. It seems to me that Honor should maybe be a variant of alignment or just a new rank-style mechanic (like Reknown) and that Sanity should be a resource based on Wisdom rather than its own ability score.

Discuss.

I understand they are optional stats, I am curious exactly what their offered uses in the DMG are? I imagine Sanity has to do with changes to Fear and Charmed effects, but im not sure what kind of vavule that honor could have, perhaps how people interpet your social actions.

I'm mostly in agreement with the OP. While I think it's an interesting approach to make Honor and Sanity stats, to me they fit more naturally under the faction system and Wisdom, respectively. Alternately, I could see a system where players have the psychic equivalent to hit points, and when those hit points are whittled down they are out of the action, or perhaps even suffer a lingering psychic wound. In any case, there are lots of different ways to model these things and it would be fun to see some alternatives.

Honor is a stat, that embodies the (mostly far-east) virtues, which makes a man/woman more than an animal and seperates the lowly thief from the proud and honorable warrior, who just get things right. If you're making a L5R kind of campaign or simply wants to empower that those who life rightly can use their honor to do so (and get some nifty boosts), it makes perfect sense to include it as an ability score. Someone wants to turn you into its slave? Nope, honor saving throw, a true warrior doesn't give in to this lowly behaviour.

Sanity is more for a Lovecraft campaign. If you know these, you'll agree. If not, then you might never saw and felt the horror which will invades your mind and never ends.

Even though you could replace honor and sanity with CHA and WIS respectly, these ability scores are simple but great mechanism to make the campaign much more into the style you want to create. Being a samurai is following bushido, not cutting down foes. And sometimes your will is not enough to resist the insanity which will leave you scarred.
