How Do You Build A Gish?

We have been crunching the numbers and are wondering how do you build a Gish? So far we have come across several problems due to the way somatic gestures work in this game. Put simply you can't threaten someone if you want to cast a spell and the other problem is multiple attribute dependency or MAD. The warcaster feat also seems to be a feat tax which feeds back into the MAD thing due to the limited number of feats most of the classes get. I'm not sure to buff a spell casting stat, take a feat, buff dexterity or stength for the atack roles and if medium armor is useful or not for those classes that laclk heavy armor proficiency. For dex based characters you generally want to buff the hell out of your dexterity score which does eliminate the option for feats or buffing your spellcaster stat.

Having a 16/16 for your stats seems the best thing to do and maybe you do not buff either one if you want feats.

Here are the following ones we have looked at.

Eldritch Knight, seems weak and can't really threaten a square and cast shield wiothout the warcaster feat. Potential high dex and intelligence elf build there but not 100% sure.

Melee Bard, looks good on paper but the normal attacks seem weak althoguh you get 2 attacks at level 6 and can cast a spell+attack at level 14 but that is a long time to wait. Can add inspiration dice to damage but most likely will only have 2 or 3 of them unless buffing charisma score. Has powerful buff spells like Faerie Fire and can steal some Paladin spells at level 10 and use control spells like sleep and vicious mockery.

Light Cleric. Lacks heavy armor, probably will not be interested in making to many physical attacks anyway so it seems an easy choice to buff Wisdom, have 14 dex and wear medium armor, use a shield and not bother carrying anything in a hand to enable spell casting. Almost seems to be a quasi blaster but lacks a decent attack cantrip as sacred flame is the only damge dealing cleric cantrip and that is save for no damage.

War/Tempest Clerics. Easy choice to wear heavy armor but you could go high dex and use a rapier with the war cleric.

Paladin. With careful spell selection you can avoid the somatic spell part anyway.

Multiclass fighter1/WizardX. Seems better than the Eldritch knight.

I may have missed some but has anyone else played Gish characters and what have youdone in terms of MAD, feat selection and what if any stats to buff? I get to chose a new PC to play now the PHB have arrived so my level 2 archer fighter is likely to be replaced with something else and I have not seen a Gish class in action yet so I want to try one out and see how iit goes even if they are not the most powerful concept in the game.

Fighter 11 (Eldritch Knight)/Rogue 9 (Arcane Trickster) lacks many spells, but has nice versatility, especially with Crossbow Expert and War Caster.  It probably isn't enough of a caster for many, but it still looks pretty fun to me.  It is an Int/Dex build, as you point out.

Fighter12(Eldritch Knight)/Wizard 8 (multiple specialties can work, I like abjurer) or Fighter 11/Wizard 9.

Your single-target power is melee attacks (3 a round).  You use spells for utility, control, buffs, or AoE.

With 12/8, you get an extra feat/stat bump.  With 11/9, you can prepare 5th level spells and have spell slots up to 7th level (as a 13th level wizard).

I haven't played with the numbers, but I'm pretty sure there's a strong warlock/paladin build that can be put together.  You'd take only a few levels in paladin (2 to 4) and the rest in warlock, and use your short rest spell slots with blade pact to spam smites.

If you are talking about a true Gish, I think that Fighter 12 (EK)/Wizard 8 is optimal.  If you want something a bit more focused towards spells, I think that Ftr (EK) 6/Wizard 14 is also strong.

If you want to have full casting and be a solid fighter, I would look at either Warlock (Pact Blade) or Valorous Bard or even a combination of them.  [Warlock 3/Bard 17 looks strong...go tome with Warlock and Valor with Bard].

Why can't an Eldritch Knight threaten a square and cast shield?  Is there a rule I'm missing?  Can't you hold your weapon in one hand and cast with the other?

I don't understand why this conversation ever makes it past the Duelist Fighting Style. It is tailor made for the Eldritch Knight/Gish. You even get the ability to cast cantrips and attack in the same turn, which is only possible with an empty off-hand or the War Caster feat. Pick one and be done with it.

Page 164 conflicts with the descrfiption of the invocation.  The invocation grants you the ability to attack with your pact weapon twice as opposed to once when you take an Attack action.  This would give a single extra attack above a Fighter's Extra Actions, as it turns one of those attacks during that Attack action into two.

I'd still default to page 164.  This editon seems like one that could get out of hand with liberal adjudications.

Both Thirsting Blade and Extra Attack have precisely the same wording except that Thirsting Blade restricts you using a pact weapon. They both say you get to attack twice instead of once when you use the Attack action. Neither claims to add attacks on top of what you can already do. How could they possibly combine to give you more than two attacks? They both say you get exactly two, not an additional.

I think casting an attack cantrip and making a bonus action attack isn't a good choice for an Eldritch Knight, since they can just pile on more damage with extra attacks. I think it works more as a utility feature. For example, an Eldritch Knight who casts Blade Ward suddenly becomes much harder to take down and still can lash out. They can also cast minor illusions which might give themselves or allies advantage in combat, if used creatively.

What about a two weapon fighter/wizard with the War Caster feat? Mearls has stated you are allowed to "tuck a weapon under the arm to cast". This should allow you to gain an extra attack and cast.

using a dex based EK currently, jus dinged 8 tonite.

stout halfling, first 2 attribute bumps were used for war caster and getting dex to 20. Am currently strictly ranged based unless i get surprised/focused and cant maneuver out, at which point I use shocking grasp, take their reaction away, step back and toss an arrow down their throat.

normal ranged attack round is fire bolt w/ +6 to attack doing 2d10 damage, followed by short bow attack which is +10 (5 dex, 2 archer, 3 proficiency) 1d6+5.

I am probably going to take sharpshooter which would make my ranged attacks +5 then doing 1d6+15, at which point I would make 2 short bow attacks instead of the cantrip damage, unless it was to use SG to get away without an AOO.

I really like the play style, and with damaging cantrips, it doesnt feel like im running out of spells. I normally save them for a well timed shield or a shatter if the baddies are positionally cooperating.

Side note, Gust of wind is AMAZING while dungeon crawling down long corridors.

Fighter 1 [or 2 for surge]/Warlock X (Strength Pact of Blade)

All Warlock (Dexterity Pact of Blade)

Note that if you're going straight-up Blade Pact with a Warlock your Cha doesn't need to be particularly pumped. Choose spells without DCs (such as self-buffs, summons and Hex), so MAD isn't as much of a problem. Don't ignore it entirely though as Lifedrinker lets you add Cha modifier to weapon damage at 12.

This leaves you more room for feats of course. Warcaster is of course delicious. Resilient (con) for a Human Variant Warlock at 1 is also strong.

Pure warlock is the best Gish.

You get 9th level spells (foresight anyone for advantage on all rolls all day long and all attacks against you suffer disadvantage).

From levels 1-10 you deal better damage than the fighter (same number of attacks + hex).

Darkness + Devil's Sight cast on your weapon means you can gain advantage on all attacks and enemies suffer disadvantage on all attacks. It also allows you to sneak well.

Pomearm Master + War Caster + Eldritch Blast on opportunity attacks means you can make 4 attacks as an opportunity attack compared to a fighter's 1.

Read the rules.

The Attack Action is a special type of action. When you take the attack action, you can make an attack. Certain special abilities allow you to attack twice (or more) when you take the Attack Action. These abilities don't stack because they replace what normally happens when you take the Attack Action.

Some abilities allow you to attack without using te attack action. For example, Great Weapon Master allows you to make an attack as a bonus action when you score a critical hit or drop an enemy to 0 HP. Even if you have the Extra Attack feature, you still only make a single attack as a bonus action though as you are not taking the Attack Action.

So theory crafting aside what has been peoples experiences with Gish? With more wizard levels I am giving up mutiple attacks and favor of more spells hence people are saying take 6 levels of fighter and X wizard. Probably need the warcaster feat as well for most builds. EK6/Wiz4 by level 10 gives me level 3 spells which will mostly be used for bufifng and stuff I suppose and I will also have 3 feats/stat buffs. That seems to be the point where the Ftr/Wizard becomes good as such.

Valorious bard also looks interesting but kiind of stuck in medium and light armor. Half Elf Valorious bard could have 16 strength, 14 Con/Cha/Dex though.

I think EK 5/ Sorc x is a better combo.  Only pick spells that don't need int, like shield.  Get the offense from sorc.  Dragon sorc also gives 13 base AC and 1 HP per level.  That halves the difference between sorc and fighter hps.  Also, you can add your cha mod to damage of a particular type.  Fire, lightning etc.  Then you have metamagic for quick spells and then attack.  Go dex/cha based.

Ok can you guys help me plot out a path as a Fighter/Wizard until level 10 as a strength based heavy armor user vs a Valorious bard of some description. I think we can agree the abjurer is the best wizard specialty for this vs say a valorious bard who may be strength or dex based.

I do lean towards taking feats over stat buffs unless dex based and I probably want the warcaster feat just because. Other feats I am eyeing up would be heavy armor master, heavy wepaon master or polearm master, and mounted combatant for a true Eldritch Knight.

I will be level 2 and the build needs to come online as such by level 10 at the latest.  Also if someone can come up with a way to use medium armor  and strength togather so I do not have to buff my dex all the time to keep my AC out of the gutter that would be great as well.

Oddball combinations are also fine as well but please post a path in terms of levels and expected feats. Nice and boring like a single classed cleric are also fine as I do not know what everyone else will take so I may end up taking a cleric for example if we lack healing.  Some of you have posted XYZ class_ABC class but just carry it a bit further as I do not want to suck to much while getting to the end point which is an advanatage EKs, Bards and Clerics offer.

Remember that the bard can poach paladin smites and can do so many levels before the paladin has access to such spells.

Warcaster is only needed if you plan on using buffs a lot or if you are a warlock abusing Polearm master + eldritch blast.

Casting a spell (other than a smite) and attacking during the same round is generally a bad choice. Focus on one or the other. This generally means you can have a low magic ability score if you plan on mostly making weapon attacks. Who cares if your save DCs are low if most of your spells don't use save DCs (invisibility, flight, magic weapon, elemental weapon, foresight, darkness, levitate, Mage armor, silence, etc).

Valorious bard is also better at debuffs. I think I want a gish that cats arcane spells as opposed to the Paladin. Valorious bard would probably be a lvl 1 fighter/ bard X to pick up the required armor.

I want to use arcane spells and I probably want to go strength based nad ht stuff with a heavy stick. Part of this is because I have not seen a gish yet in 5E and because I have seen a  lot of ded based PCs and used one in Lost Mines the human archer pregen I tweaked a bit.

Why do you want heavy armor?

Dex 14 is easy to get. Dex 14 + Half Plate is only 1 less AC than Full Plate (and costs only 1/2 as much). It seems like a waste to take 1 level of fighter only. It hinders your spellcasting progression, your total spell slots, and class features. You are pretty much better off going 100% in a class if you plan on casting any spells.

Warlock is great for a more caster oriented gish. Bard is great for a jack of all trades gish. Eldritch Knight is basically just a fighter who can cast a few minor buff spells before combat.

I still say the best Gish is the Battlemaster fighter. Reflavor maneuvers as "blade spells". They each cost 1 mana (superiority die). Mana recharges with a short rest. They require saving throws and deal additional damage. It works out perfectly.

Book of Nine Swrods has a dirty repuation in my group. I think my copy I got after 4th Ed landed is languising on a pile of junk in the spare room. I do not let is hangout with my other D&D books in case it contaminates them (I actually left it out and have not put it back yet).

Ironically the Book of 9 Swords is not banned in 3.5 games or even Pathfinder but none of my players will touch it. Never seen it used once.

(Reply to #109)

Aelioran

I'll throw in my current favorite gish:  Paladin 15/Warlock 5 (or 12/8)

Stats aren’t too bad as there is some overlap with Charisma as your Paladin and Warlock caster stats. Go Str (or Dex) and Cha with your third in Con.

Either use a polearm as Lawolf suggests, or for a more martial feel go Sword/board with Duelist fighting style and the Resilience (Con) feat instead of War Caster.

You get good melee attacks (Assuming Duelist style, either 2 long sword attacks with hex at 2d8+1d6+7 each, or 3 attacks with haste at 2d8+7 each. If your DM allows you to take Lifedrinker off total level the bonus damage increases to 12), can smite often for massive damage bursts, and gain decent arcane spells to add to your toolbox, especially if you go Oath of Vengeance or Ancients. These spells include Fly, Haste, Hex, Invisibility, Mirror Image, Misty Step, Dimension Door, Stoneskin, Fireball, and Darkness to name a few. You can use your Paladin spell slots to cast your arcane spells, and 2 slots per short rest to use on whatever you feel like. You are tough to kill as you have awesome saves, heavy armor, temporary hit points and healing when you need it. And, to top it off, you have a scaling powerhouse cantrip if you need to blast something at range.

Personally, I like the idea of looking right into my opponent’s eyes as my weapon materializes in my hand. Too cool.

Anyway, that’s my take.

So, after all this deliberation and then some, I've decided the best Gish lives in a zone, depending on how much weapon vs. spell damage you want.  My niche lies between Fighter 2 (Action Surge)/Champion 3 (Crit chance) and Warlock 2 (Eldrich Blast + Agonizing Blast)/Hexblade 12 (getting all the Hexblade Invocations), with all remaining levels going to Dragonblood Sorcerer (elemental affinity, metamagic versatility, better spell list and progression).  With this, you get strong physical attacks (although not often with a large number of attacks), strong magic attacks, and Eldritch Blast/Scorching Ray/Hex synergy, making your physical, force, and fire attacks all pretty nice (if you get elemental affinity).  A strong physical Gish would go Hexblade 12/Champion 3, while a casting Gish would go Fighter 2/Warlock 2, using Quickened Sorcerer spells and powers in synergy with Hex and Action Surge (as well as having high enough spells to attack into Globes of Invulnerability).

So that would be my final answer. Fighter 2/Warlock 2/Dragonblood Sorcerer 5, with the other 11 levels as the player sees fit (Sorcerer 6 for fire affinity with Scorching Ray is tempting to make mandatory, but sword focused Gishes will want Hexblade 12/Champion 5 too much).

YMMV, IMO, ROFLMAOBBQ, etc.

Hexblade? I assume you mean Bladelock. The three warlock pacts are referred to on the forums as Bladelocks, Chainlocks, and Tomelocks respectively, for obvious reasons. Hexblades don't technically exist in 5E, as the warlock killed the Hexblade in 4E, and stole its stuff.

The 4E Hexblade Warlock was then killed in turn by the 5E warlock, who reduced the entire class to a single class feature.

You misunderstand me.... I wanted to clarify you were referring to the pact blade warlock, and not a different class called "Hexblade" (which exists in two editions, and which I expect some people have converted to 5E).

A Hexblade (class) is entirely possible. It is also possible for a Hexblade subclass to exist, perhaps as a variant of the Paladin, Ranger, Sorcerer or Wizard. It is unlikely that the dev's would create such a class (or subclass), but that does not stop homebrew or TPPs from using the term. Its not like the word is original enough to be copyright or trademarked.

I refuse to continue this discussion any further. It is pointless. You are trying to turn something involving semantics and synonyms into an argument and I refuse to bite.... If you wish to discuss something relating to the OP, or another related tangent fine - but I refuse to continue this particular conversation further otherwise. I will not even dignify your comment with a rebuttal (although I have one) - as it is simply not worth my time to argue with you. Have fun believing what you will. I couldn't care less...

And before you think I am acting childish - these are the words of someone who is bored with the conversation and should be taken with that inflection in mind. These are not the words of someone who is being emotional - but if you choose to view it that way, again not my problem. I simply have better things to discuss. Whether such discussions include you or not, is up to you and whether you say something interesting or whether you choose to continue this pointless argument.

I clarified my position previously. The ball is in your court in respect to whether you take me at my word or not. I am satisfied that you understood me well enough for the conversation to move on beyond this tangent. If you wish to continue it - I must regretfully inform you that this will be my last post on the issue. I have had similar runins with you in the recent past and I do not wish to revisit them. Last time, it resulted in me adding you to my ignore list for several days. The only reason I took you off said list was due to the fact that I am not the grudge-holding type.

Please don't make me regret that decision as I think you have a lot to offer a discussion (even though our opinions frequently differ), when you are not being needlessly argumentative. Discussions are boring without opposing viewpoints. Id much sooner engage in a good debate over something interesting, than have a discussion with a bunch of "yes" men - or an argument over something as stupid as semantics

Another way to settle the somantic component issue is to go with two handed weapon and a component pouch instead of a focus.  The pouch only needs to be on you, you don't have to ready it like a wand or staff.  You can use one hand for both material and somatic components.  You can't weild a two handed weapon with one hand, but you can certainly hold one one.  Basically to cast you just go to a one handed grip, use the free hand for somatic, and if there is a material you can use the same hand to dip into your componenet pouch there at your side.

That is the option I prefer as well. That, or a 1H weapon and a free hand.... Arcane foci can be disarmed using the disarming attack maneuver. Your component pouch -not so much.

While it is not out of the realms of possibility for your CP to be disarmed, it is far less likely as I expect most monsters capable of disarming to use similar language to that of the disarming attack maneuver.

In 5e you can wield a glaive in one hand.  You cannot use the glaive as a weapon with one hand.  The two handed property does not say it takes both hands to wield a two handed weapon.  It never mentions wielding at all.

Hence the glaive wielding Warlock with Repelling Blast, Warcaster, and Polearm Master.  The glaive is ornamental, for the feat.  You just have to be holding it.
