| #1TheWaker43Sep 18, 2014 23:03:41 | I just ordered the Player Handbook but it has not arrived yet but would like to go ahead and order a set of dice while I wait. I noticed the Starter Set only has six, a standard set minus the d100. I've got at least five or six of the standard seven dice sets in my dice bag as well as tons of d6's scattered among other games. So I have more than enough to cover it But I just like to pick up new matching sets when I get a new game. So for for guys that have been playing it over the past month what do you feel is a good combination of dice? Thanks |
| #2frothsofSep 19, 2014 0:45:43 | What |
| #32ChlorobutanalSep 19, 2014 0:54:13 | I think 4 sets of 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 20 would be more than enough to get started. Depending on the kind of character you want to play, you may want to specialize in certain dice and get extra copies ("These are my Sneak Attack dice!"). |
| #4autolycusSep 19, 2014 1:56:26 | The standard seven dice + an extra d20 for advantage/disadvantage rolls.
This is what I recommend for my players. |
| #5thespaceinvaderSep 19, 2014 2:04:05 | As many as you can get your hands on, of all types. Once you start getting 4 attacks per turn on your Fighter, or rolling 40d6 Meteor Swarms, you'll want to be able to roll all the dice for your turn together... |
| #6OraibiSep 19, 2014 2:15:16 | You probably need at least 100 of each type of dice to play this game, maybe more depending on how long your game session goes.
... you don't use the same die over and over again, do you? I only use fresh, virgin dice on every roll. And discard them once they're used. It's luckier that way.

| #7lawrencehoySep 19, 2014 3:00:04 | I'm a fan of the traditional 10 die set: 1d4, 4d6, 1d8, 2d10, 1d12, & 1d20. I like different colors for the extra 3 d6s and the extra d10; but, that's just me. Having one of the d10s be a "tens ten" (with a zero on the end of each digit) is also nice; it could then match the core set coloring.
However, for 5th Edition, I'd also add one of these dice. Indeed, I bought one for each of my players, during the playtest. |
| #8ShiroikenSep 19, 2014 3:09:19 | The standard 6 dice is all you "need," but more dice is always good. I would say my prefered minimums would be:
3d4 4d6 3d8 2d10 (different colors or %) 2d12 2d20 (different colors)
Pretty much any weapon die needs 2 (for criticals), and a second d20 for Adv/Dis. 4d6 are needed for character creation, and there enough effects that use d4 thru d8 that I'd want some extras. |
| #9ZardnaarSep 19, 2014 3:49:55 | I have access to a lot of dice but I mostly use 2 sets of dice and an additional 6d6 and 2d20 as I am the DM and may roll 4+ attacks at once and count the hits. So a minimum of around 14 dice through to 25 with multiple sets as back up as buy a new set every 2 years or so+ individual dice. |
| #10spelleySep 19, 2014 7:54:36 | Two dice sets is usually ideal. More d20s never hurt, and if you are a Rogue you will probably want about a quadrillion d6, give or take a million. |
| #11Thank_DogSep 19, 2014 8:18:09 | All of them. |

| #14DemoMonkeySep 19, 2014 10:43:22 | 2 of each, two extra d20s and 10 extra d6s. |
| #15TrillinonSep 19, 2014 10:50:56 | The base seven is generally okay, but I like to have a dice brick of d6s around for spellcasters. A second d20 could be useful, but I think advantage and disadvanage are more exciting with a single d20 rolled twice. |
| #16masterfat78Sep 19, 2014 12:03:35 | Over 9000!! |
| #17AaronOfBarbariaSep 19, 2014 12:13:45 | I am partial to the number of dice that WotC used to include in their D&D dice sets, plus an additional d20 of a different color... because I would rather re-roll dice, or ask other players to hand me a few of theirs temporarily, than have more dice taking up real estate on the table than 2d20, 1d12, 1d10, 2d10 (of different colors, or one having the 10s digits), 1d8, 4d6, and 1d4 |
| #18VeleriaSep 19, 2014 12:37:11 | 2 sets is a good starting point. you may need more depending on what you play but this will handle mostcharacter fine until you get a few levels in. |
| #19TheLyonsSep 19, 2014 13:21:27 | Personally, I would hate playing with just a basic set of 7 dice. 14 total would be my minimum. Even then I would prefer more but ya know. |

| #22CCSSep 19, 2014 17:06:45 | My (d&d) dice bag contains 2 of each die, and a few tokens, markers, etc. None/very few of my dice come from the same set. Just favorite dice from throughout the years...... |
| #23DM_HEEGZSep 19, 2014 19:13:37 | I have about ten sets of dice. When I DM I only use about 3-4 of them max. |
| #24TheWaker43Sep 19, 2014 20:21:56 | Cool, thanks everybody pretty muc answered my question. |
| #25ChrisCarlsonSep 20, 2014 9:18:42 | How many dice do you need for 5th edition?
Yes. |
