Given how absurdly more useful the Perception skill is than any other skill in the game, I've decided to make Perception strictly a type of defense, like Armor Class, meaning that passive perception is the only type of perception there is. Like AC, a creature's perception defense is something that other creatures always roll against, usually with Stealth. Hidden things, like traps or secret doors or hazards, will have a Concealment bonus that modifies a check versus their Perception defense. All of the "active" uses of Perception will be rolled into Investigation.
On the surface, this house rule doesn't really change any actual rules, other than make traps and such "attack" passive perception. The effect is subtle, but meaningful. Since perception is always defensive, it means that only one character in the party needs a good perception score (unless you split the party, but Basic already has a disclaimer about that). This puts it more in line with other skills, like Arcana, that only one member of the party needs to be good at. Fewer players will feel the need to be proficient in perception, which opens the door for a more diverse set of skills in the party. Yay teamwork.
In situations were players tell the DM that they're being actively wary (or vice versa), their Stealth or Concealment checks will be made with disadvantage.
I think that covers everything. Thoughts? |

For 6th edition- move most wis saves to Int, make perception even slightly more important. Wis becomes a rarely used save + perception, Int takes over as being the common save for magic and mental stuff. |
