I'm very new to tabletop role-playing games, but I am excited to get started! I'm loving just how customizable the Dungeons and Dragons experience is! I figured that if D&D at it's most basic level includes the books, dice, and paper, I should treat myself with some unique, maybe even expensive dice to compliment my Dungeons and Dragons experience.

I apologize if this kind of question doesn't belong in this section. It seemed fitting anyway.

I'd start with chessex.com and work from there.

I try to support my local game store, but if that's not an option or you want to shop online check out the dwarven dice at http://crystalcaste.com/ or metal dice at http://www.dnddice.com/index.php/metal-dice.html

Personally I just stick with regular opaque dice that are easy to read, but have fun shopping!

On a whim, I googled 3d printer dice. If anyone thought your little plastic caltrop d4s were bad, check out the first few results.

Well, if you must have expensive, table-denting, kick-ass-looking dice, google "Dwarven Metal dice".

They're solid cast metal. Pay attention to size, though. 16mm is standard, 12mm is small and hard to read. Also, not intimidating, so it defeats the purpose of buying metal dice.

There's also semi-precious stones, 3-D printed sets that look like the work of sorcery, and even real bone, mastadon tusk, meteorite...The sky isn't even the limit, lol, if you really look, and have tons of disposable income.

I've found that more = better, though. You can find a bag o' dice (usually about 60-100 random plastic D&D dice, over a pound) for less money than one set of amazing dice. Besides, wizards will be rolling handfuls of d6's and such by level 5.

Yeah, if you're looking for amazing dice, Crystal Caste is the place to go.

If you're looking for a giant pile of dice, Chessex has got you covered (check out the Pound-O-Dice).

Chessex has a great selection.  I still have a preference for the old school dice with straight edges that you can color in yourself.  http://www.gamesciencedice.com/Dice-sets_c_1.html  Unfortunatlye, the gamescience selection is almost non-existent.

My absolute favorites are the dice from Q-workshop:

I will second the recommendation for Gamescience's precision dice. I have some of their d20s, and they're fantastic.

I've been looking for the same thing. I have some really nice red and blue Koplow deice from yonks ago, so I want to get more in the same style.

Check out the following.

One of the shops in my city had some Q-Workshop dice for sale, so I asked it I could look at them. I think they were the Celtic pattern ones. The patterns on them are nice but are really distracting, to the point where it is hard to read the numbers because they get lost in all the decoration. Your milage may vary, of course.

I am still thinking about getting one of these https://www.thediceshoponline.com/dice/2077/Koplow-Clear-Double-Dice-20-Sided-D20-Dice

for advantage disadvantage

Chessex is good, me got a couple of sets.

If you want to buy in cheap bulk, try Wiz Dice.

I also bought two giant d20 at Sausalito last Nov. I am using it for adv/disadv rolls and boss fight. Look at the player's expression when the boss rolls to attack. Haha. But gotta be careful when rolling on glass table. These giant dice are heavy.

This discussion reminded me of the old 100-side die I used to have. Not sure whatever happened to it. Much more novel than practical, since it was just a ball with little divets... likely to roll off your table when used, and you had to peer closely to identify which number was actually face up.

Yet it earned me funny looks and snickers, so it was totally worth it.

I had some gamescience dice that I had bought at my local game shop in the late '80s. Managed to lose them somehow in the years I didn't game, basically the last 10 years. I didn't realize they were gamescience dice at the time but when I decided to start D&D again about six months ago I did a little web searching.

At that time, gamescience dice were no longer in production, so I bought some sets off of ebay. It looks like the gamesciencedice.com web site has a few sets for sale. Personally, I quite like the Color Burst and Ugly Dice sets. The Color Burst is $8 and the Ugly Dice is $4.

I use the Ugly Dice as the the critical hit or (for a d20) the advantage/disadvantage die. As a player or DM, but especially as a player) I can pre-roll my attacks to speed combat. I use the Ugly d20 for potential advantage or disadvantage or I know what die to ignore if I don't have it. I also roll an Ugly die for damage so if I get a critical hit I know what dice to add or what dice to ignore if I don't get a critical. Since the dice are so obviously different the DM knows I'm not trying to scam him.

But, really, I love the gamescience dice because I love the hard edges and I love coloring my dice in with a crayon.
