If D&D added a d14, d16, and d18, would you be opposed to this?

Say at some point, either in this edition or a later iteration of D&D, they finally added a d14, a d16, and a d18, how would you feel?  Let's say 1 of each die came in the starter set as well, still for the low price of $20, would you be glad for this chance at additional dice?

Not really, I mean dice are fun but cramming 3 extras into a set is just meh. I can't evene reccommend their use as HP die because that would be far too much variation over that stat which would lead to all sorts of problems.

I would prefer some handheld number calculator.  I would like a system for example where a dagger does 1d4 damage, if you have a +3 to hit it does 1d7.  I really don't like critters that have a high minimum damage, any creature or attack could be a glancing blow for 1 damage.

They could give it a cool appearance and call it a digital device that you roll just like the dice we are used too.

What about a stylized tape measure that was in five-foot increments to the inch for easy grid distance measuring?

I'd use them, I'm using them in my DCC game now but I'd like for it to make sense as well for their use.

Dice should only be platonic solids. That's the way it was in my youth, and that's the way it should stay.

I'm happy with the traditional dice; I see no reason to change any of that, at this point in time.

Any additional dice, at this point in time, are going to have very little rules value to them. The time to add dice types is when the rules are being created; so that they can be integrated and made useful within the rules.

DIce shouldn't be only even numbers. There should be d7, d9, d11, d13 and so on. So if a normal weapon does d8 damage, say, a +1 weapon could do d9.

Spell damage, of course, should use fractal dice because it's more arcane. You can't roll them in three dimensions, though - an irrational number of the sides are imaginary.

I'd probably just roll either a d20 or a d6 (high/low) + d8 or d10 rerolling out of range numbers than carry additional dice.  For die rolling apps it'll clutter the interface even more.

At some point you should just switch the system to use all D100 or have an app that does all the RNG than have many different dice.

I was just thinking “So, the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG?"

I don’t think D&D will ever move away from or change the core set of dice. It’s part of the game’s core identity at this point.

The D&D dices are "platonic solid polyhedrons". How would be the shape of a d14, d16 and d18?

Ok, I have found the answer.

To the OP- no more dice for D&D, thank you. To anyone who badmouthed the d12, may the curse of Lolth taint you! The poor d12 doesn't get enough love as it is. Its the coolest of the die (d4 is close). All respect I had for Mechapilot is lost to the Abyss...

Here's a picture of my "strange" dice.  Note that the d3, d5, and d7 cheat: they're actually another d6, d10, and d14 that just are double labeled. But the d14, d24, d30, and d60 are legitimately that many sides!

I use my d60 in conjuction with the d24 and d7 and d30 when I want random time. I also have a bunch of "random" tables that I felt would be too limited with a d20 but too expansive with a d%, so I went with d30 or d60 for those. For example, I felt the options for the Guild Artisan were too few, so I expanded those to 30. The yellow ones came as a set. Found them all at The Compleat Strategist, the big tabletop store in Manhattan.

d14 is definitely a good idea. its not a platonic solid but neither is a d10. These would be complimentary in a sense. 1-7 is one of the numbers we often run into, but don't have dice options for.

d6/3 = 2

d6/2 = 3

d4 = 4

d10/2 =5

d6 = 6

??? =7

d8 = 8

2d6/2 = 9 (1-3, 4-6, 7-9)

d10 = 10

I would play DnD with those dice at my table.  First I would allow max hit points per HD.  Then I would make all weapons do 1d6 damage.

If you beat AC by 3, roll 1d14, add result to the 1d6 damage roll.  If you beat AC by 6 add 1d16 to the damage roll.  If you beat AC by 9 add 1d18 to the damage roll.

I would be less inclined to ban these dice and more interested in finding ways to use them.

Maybe further build off of the over AC die rolls by adding in additional results, like:

1- Weapon break threat - roll bonus die and broken weapon on a 1

2-13 Weapon damage normal bonus

14 - Weapon stuck, must use bonus action to remove from foe.  Foe rolls (XDice) Con save to avoid stun.

After some test games of course, whatever.

I'll pass on the new die sizes, because I don't see a crying need that they fulfill.  ("Souveneir' is the first to mind, and there are equally good ways to deal with that.)

But if somebody can show me such a crying need, I'll reconsider.

I see the purpose in a die size going higher as in perhaps for magical weapon purposes?

Instead of a magical weapon being 1d6+1, what if it went from 1d6 to 1d8?

So, a natural progression from a d12 would take it to d14 at +1, d16 at +2, d18 at +3, and finally d20 at +4 if somebody happens to get one of those.

By the way, the 2 sided dice joke eariler, which was the coin, in a way, the dice kind of exist, as seen in the picture below,

Based on what I have read here, there're more players willing to remove than to add dices from the D&D core dice set. I played Storyteller and GURPS for some time. Both systems uses just the same kind of dices: d10s and d6s, respectively. To me, one of the most appealing characteristics of D&D is the dice diversity. However, I don't expect that D&D will ever use a non-standard dice someday since it's a kind of trademark of the system. But that doesn't mean they can't have a place. For instance, I recall a d3 and d2 roll in D&D 3.5. On the same way, we could use the exotic dices as an optional rule to substitute dices with bonus or penalties. For example: d20-4 could be a d16.

Personally I'm not a fan of the d14 and d18, but I am a fan of the d16 and d24.

I feel it fits well with the standard "dice chain"

d2

d3

d4

d6

d8

d10

d12

d16

d20

d24

In fact, prior to 5e, I had started implementing something a lot like Advantage / Disadvantage but using the d24 & d16 instead of two dice keep high / keep low.

To avoid confusion regarding what die to roll when you've got a pile of weird dice (d5, d7, d3, etc) we've taken to colouring in the full face of the highest face of the die with a black sharpie. So the whole die is red, for instance, with white numbering, and one black face at the highest face (with the white numbering showing clearly).

Near as I can tell, the design intent of the greataxe doing 1d12 is that a bigger die gets more magnification from critical hits, and barbarians and half-orcs enjoy even greater magnification, compared to a greatsword. (Edit: with the result that axes are mechanically favored by these characters, which enforces the traditional image that such characters like axes.)

A greataxe also becomes a brutal but unreliable weapon, while a greatsword has the feel of a reliable but unspectacular one. The axe feels more barbaric, like something a frothing killer would use for the possibility of big damage or overkill but an equal possibility of failing (the archetypal barbarian), while the sword would be the better choice for a more level-headed character who prefers more predictable results (closer to a veteran soldier).

I like it. It's a very subtle difference that allows these nuances to manifest mechanically. Pity that only the greatsword has the trait that introduces this difference.
