My suggested change to the ranger is very simple. Remove the requirements for both the favoured enemy and favoured terrain so that both abilities work on any enemy and any terrain.

I believe this will bring the ranger back in line with other classes in terms of versatility and player engagement.

What do you think?

That or let you start with 3 of each. Or and included urban and dungeons for terrains. And included arcanists, priests, warriors, and scoundrels as favored enemies. Oh and added Charisma (Intimidate) to your skill bonus or advantage. You'd think they'd avoid the "ranger dilemma" this time.

The situalationalness of the abilities are not the issue.  To me, the abilities themselves (even if they applied universally like you suggested) are useless to marginal.  The fact that they are situational just makes them worse.  I think in most cases, they may as well not exist.

The easy fix in my opinion is getting advantage to attack rolls against a ranger's favoured enemy, or a damage bonus.  Then having a favoured enemy appear in a module may actually mean something.

Situationalness is exactly the problem. Perhaps they need more method to increase their damage capabilites, but restricting those advantages to a select few enemy types cripples the class. I say screw Favored anything, make Rangers versatile!

I've decided that in my campaign I'm going to give rangers a slightly toned down version of the War Priest ability;

Seeker's Strike:  Beginning at level 2, when a ranger misses with a weapon attack when using the attack action, they may immediatly use a bonus action to make another weapon attack against the same enemy.  They may use this ability a number of times equal to their Wisdom modifier (minimum once)  They regain all expended uses when they finish a long rest.

In adition to giving them advantage on attack rolls on their favoured enemy - I think this will make the rangers more consistant with their damage, without giving them more 'nova' damage, thus giving them a slightly different niche than the other classes.  (The reason I didn't take the War Priest ability straight up was because it could double their Hunter's Mark damage when that spell is active.  This just makes it more consistent.)

I also took the idea from the OP, but changed is slightly.

Expert Tracker:  Beginning at level 1, rangers are expert trackers.  They gain advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks made to find and follow tracks  (Regardless of weather they were left by their favoured enemy or not.)
