I'm starting a new group in the Lost Mines of Phandelver and one of the biggest campaigns the first group I ran through had was that their motivations to save Gundren felt forced. This is meant to adrdress that issue and to acquaint new players to the game and the edition to some of the rules.

Credit goes to MrHotter in this thread for sparking many of the ideas that I have adapted here.

Tavern Games

You find yourself in the city of Neverwinter at the Belle Fest, a tavern near the southern gates. Tonight is the night of the weekly "Games" at the Belle Fest where locals, merchant guards, and even a few would-be adventurers compete in various contests for small prizes that are sponsored by local craftsmen and patrons of the tavern.

The players will be entering around 6:00. Each event they choose to participate in will take about an hour (wainting for other contestants to have a chance, time competing...). Some simple events will be taking place in the tavern each hour until midnight.

Bar Trivia – Arcana, Religion, and/or History

Around one long table sits a markedly different crowd. Unlike the loud, jovial groups elsewhere this group sits relatively quietly. As you drift closer you see that an elf at the head of the table is reading questions off of cards and the seated tavern goers are given a short period of time to come up with an answer or are forced either pay into the pot or to leave the table.

Subject is decided by a d6 roll (1-2: Arcana, 3-4: History, 5-6: Religion). Each question has a DC of 10 no matter the subject matter. Failing to answer correctly imposes a 5 sp penalty or you must leave the table. The most correct answers at the end of 5 rounds is the winner.

Reigning champion: Vhalak the doppleganger has taken the form of the gorgeous elven lady, Erraniel. He has a +0 to his checks but gains advantage because he is using Read Thoughts to lift the answers to the questions from the other patrons.

Prize: 5d10 sp plus whatever they placed in the pot.
