It specifically states on that page that it has no affiliation with Wizards of the Coast, and basically states clearly that it is absolutely not official in any capacity.

It specifically references the WOTC 2000 OGL.

I found no relevant record of a Walkoski in either the U.S. or Canadian copyright offices, so his copyright claim is false.

 

I don't like that it's basically a copy of the OGL, but rebranded with Jim Walkoski's personal stamp. It also ties things created with it specifically to him, an unknown independent entity.

 

As a publisher interested in producing third-party works for 5E, I will say that I have no intention of ever using this "SRD5."

I just checked the website which now only hosts a note by a Jim saying he is disappointed by the negative reception the community has shown towards his efforts. He admits needing to do more legal and community research before continuing with a srd 5.

SRD5 was a really shakey idea, but the OGL does technically cover 5e compatible products, especially adventures.

 

1) Take an adventure

 

2) Design with all your assumptions following 5e encounter building and monster stats

 

3) Don't include any monster stats, just say "five goblins and a wolf are hiding here"

 

4) Don't include any monsters that aren't in the SRD

 

4a) You can include monster stats, or any monsters that you made up (skip illithids and beholders is what I'm saying) just don't ape Wizards' layout. If they happen to be missing key 3e information like their Reflex Save, and have unusual BAB for their CR, so be it.

 

5) Publish under the OGL because, hey, it's technically 3e compatible

6) Brand it as "5e Compatible" because "5e" is a meaningless, unprotected term due to the official name of the game being "Dungeons and Dragons". You just can't use any 5e branding without further liscencing information.
