This month, we’re activating a time machine and checking in to see what sort of content from prior editions you want to see adapted to fifth edition

They didn't have the warlord as an option...

Thanks for the heads-up!

From the list of classes, there weren’t any I really wanted to have added back into the game. I guess I’m pretty happy with the options we currently have.

As the opposite from Ralif_Redhammer, I checked over half of the options they gave me, plus wrote in an additional race option – the Tuathan of 4e's Heroes fo the Feywild.

I went at length about how I really don't want them to screw up the thri kreen for balance concerns. They are a giant four armed bug that jumps real well and might be a little psionic. I suggested placing the possible psionics in a feat. However any race that has four functioning arms will make certain combos possible that people would call broken, but if it doesn't have four functioning arms it isn't a thri kreen.

As a comment, I shared my opinion that the sorcerer and warlock stray too far from the core of 5th Edition in terms of mechanical expression, and that I'd like to see them revisited before adding more classes.

I did pick the Shardmind for a return, though I added that I thought some of its basic core abilities (not breathing, eating, or sleeping) need to be rejiggered, as it made them immune to a larger number of threats than most other races. But other than that, I thought them a neat race that was pretty unique and should be brought back.

I agree with SleepsInTraffic on the Thri-Kreen. As cool as the insectoid race is, getting the balance right would be tricky.

Yo did they screwup on the swordmage and put swordsage?  But here's my list for comments of what they should have added

Please add the races of Shade, Half-Drow, Fey'ri, Chaos Soul Genasi that include Storm Soul.  Also for classes please please add SwordMage, Pyromancy, Nethermamcy, and the Red Wizard .

We already kinda got a Hexblade that's the a Warlock Blade Pact.  So it would kinda defeat the purpose to have another variation of the same idea.

background world - Classical Mythologies (Greek especially - I'm reading Bulfinch's Mythology right now)

I ended up marking none of the above for the classes although I did clarify that I'd be happy with sub-classes, none of the options stood out as needing their own singular class.

I liked that they had Mystara as an option, a fairly generic setting which would be easily adapted but I would like to see the WotC spin if they revived it.

My big question about this survey, both for the choices for race and class that were on the list and those that were missing, is whether this survey is being done in time for the most popular options from these lists to be included in the free player option pdf that will come out with the Rage of Demons storyline. And are certain ones missing from this survey because they have already been chosen to be in that pdf and thus do not need to be part of a vote?

#36

I voted for the settings that added the most unique races and options (Dark Sun, Dragonlance, Kara-Tur, Mystara, Planscape, Spelljammer); and, Greyhawk (just as a different typical fantasy world option).

I voted for the classes that gave me the most nostalgic tug (alchemist, cavalier, samurai, scout, shaman, & warmage).

I voted for the races that accomanied the settings I voted for; plus, some of the more original ones (like the Gith).

I voted for Mystara, Spelljammer, and Eberron, with Hollow World as a write-in candidate. Like several people above, I likes me some non-standard fantasy options. I would like a better representation of the Eberron Artificer, a thri-kreen option, and an update of the Runecaster from the old Vikings sourcebook. I also asked (pleaded?) that pre-3e sources be adhered to for any updates; I was not happy with the WotC amendments to the kreen, for example. I have a roughly 0% chance of getting what I want, but I put my coppers in.

For some of us, the AL is the only available means of reliably playing D&D these days. Therefore, content that gets restricted by the ALPG might as well not even exist in the first place. It's a bit disheartening when I have to tell my players that they can't use all of the new player options because of balance issues.

I understand that a lot of the purists hate the notion of catering to the AL by sacrificing quality, which I can understand. However, the AL has earned its place in the 5e business model. The Expeditions provide enough new material in between book releases to keep people interested in the product.

I don't want to see classic races lose their touch as 5e player options, but I also don't want to have them be inaccessible to my players because they are unbalanced. (Although, I also wish that the AL let me use my DMG as more than just a magic item catalog.) I think that taking the Deep Gnome approach would probably work best, unlocking the full potential of the arms with a feat. Best part is that it's also an unintentional pun, getting the most out of your 4 arms at 4th level. :P

With stats like that, I doubt that a balanced PC race is even viable for the thri-kreen in 5e. I wouldn't allow anything with that much power in a home game.

Just because we had a litany of monstrous PC races in the past editions, that doesn't mean that 5e will include all of them. I would rather see WotC port more balanced PC races before attempting to convert a headache race like this. Two simpler races could probably be converted in the time spent working the minutia out of an unbalanced race. When we have more races that are balanced against each other, it'll become easier for the designers to come up with balanced conversions of unbalanced races.

We're still in Year One. No need to take on the hard stuff just yet. Just like with video game design, we gotta give the devs time to work with the system before they churn out masterpieces.

It's really a shame that Wotc did not push out this survey BEFORE they actually released the 5th Edition Core Books.  Had they done that, they would have had more lead time to consider/develop/brainstorm what future books would follow the core rulebooks.

Now that 5th Edition is approaching 1 year old.... only now are they asking us what follow-up source books we would like to see?  Uhhh, and once the Answers are in, it will take them another 6 months to deliberate and sort through all of the decisions. And then another 6 months before they can hire and muster all the necessary authors, illustrators, artists, and writers to actually produce the new stuff.  And then another 6-9 months to actually write and produce and playtest the books. And then possibly another 6-8 months of wider Beta testing (like they did with NEXT).  And then another 3 to 4 months to send the final drafts to get produced by some professional printing company.   And voila!  It will be some 2-3 years (minimum) before any of these books actually hit retail shelves or Amazon.  Can you feel my optimism here?!

Our versions are incredibly similar except for the addition of standing leap, and the poisonous bite on mine and that his gets a better dex bonus. Everything else I had listed was trapped behind feats. The multiple attacks were trapped in a feat (and were a maybe at best, I acknowledged at some point that extra attacks are way more powerful than just being able to wield multiple items), the Telepathy and innate spellcasting were trapped behind feats, and they should still be there like the deep gnome's innate spellcasting feat. I'd be fine with trapping the bite attack behind a feat as well, because yeah it's nuts (I actually only included it in the second post becaus I wanted to illustrate all the abilities the race needs to have access to to keep the race consistent with the monster manual entry and that it having four arms was not the craziest thing there). I'd still want the standing leap in there at first level. I think thri kreen will end up having to make use of "racial feats" quite a bit. I also think their fluff greatly allows this. Their average life expectancy is 30. It could just be that the thri kreen generally become adventures before they've fully developed and some never even develop all the same abilities. I basically wanted to show that of the things that thri kreen need to have access to as a race (in order to keep them consistent with the ones on the monster manual) four arms that can all wield weapons and/or a shield isn't the strongest.

I voted for a lot of things on the list...

I want to see as many of the unusual settings as possible brought forward. Spelljammer, Planescape, Ravenloft, Ebberon...

I too am aggrivated that they didn't even put Warlord on the list of classes to return. Psionist was missing too, wasn't it? Honestly, too many of those classes ought to be subclasses of existing classes anyway.

As for races... I am glad to see "Goblin", "Hobgoblin" and "Lizardfolk" on the list of things they will pretend to even consider and I really hope I am not the only one voting for those. Seriously, they had functional player versions from launch in 4E and it seems like there is far more opportunity for them to become PCs in normal game play than a lot of options. I really hope people didn't skip over those standard ones and choose only their favorite wonky ability ones.

Aasimar was on there too... rather weird given how it is already in the DMG.

Hunters with a criminal / spy background for the contact is generally one of the straight forward methods to access black market poison, and they can use it with whirlwind or volley attacks. For a racial ability, it should be on par with other racial abilities so it's probably better to move in that direction instead of the access concerns. Accessing decent poison isn't much of a concern, imo, because it exists easily enough.

Ok if you guys are up in arms over what race is allowed in a tavern then yall are going to love next season in Hillfar AL Expedtions because all non-human races were exiled out of the city and are to be scrutinized against if they are in the city.  The only non - humans that are accepted really in the city are slaves.  So I can't wait to see that post with you guys!

I like Mystara and I would not like WotC to redo it.  Spelljammer I liked and voted for.  It sits right there on the odd fringe and is easier to mess around with it without messing it up.  Please don't spellplague Mystara, WotC.

1980s indicators of the Known World tip towards moving away from eurocentric D&D.  But the hair and cleavage was all 80s.

Then again, we had lots of european stuff too...again....hair

EDIT:  Somewhat Ninja'd but I will add two for Azzy...ur, Grazel

I don't have the other two GAZ thumbnails of the dwarves and the American tribes GAZ
