In my opinion, race Variant Human and Class, College of Lore Bard. His weapons are a rapier and a staff. His equipment is a half-mask, top hat, a cloak and a suit.
Strength is 15, he is decently strong, he can hang men and in some iterations of the play he can hang a fat guy (he has to lift him over the rafter's railing). Dexterity is 17, he can dance along the rafters, do flips, run on tight ropes, etc... Plus he can dance! Constitution is 12, I don't believe he is that formidable, but I am sure he is slightly more robust than your average Joe! Intelligence is 20, he developed his own music, laybrinth, he knows the play house like the back of his hand, he is a genius who has devised a plan to make it seem like the opera house is haunted but it's really just a derranged man who lives beneath it in it's sewers. Wisdom is 16, he has sharp senses and wits, he notices even the smallest details. Charisma is 20, everyone knows about The Phantom at the opera house. They listen to his commands, know what he wants, he writes Christine's music, which draws in HUGE crowds, he even convinces a girl that he barely knows to fall in-love with him.
I chose Lore Bard because he has a wide array of skills, Stealth, Acrobatics, Athletics, Perception, Deception, Persuasion, Intimidation, he is even proficient in musical instruments and singing. He fights with a Rapier, he can cast spells, he is just a total ruthless, bad ass, who just wants to be loved. And then Meatloaf comes in and sings "I Would do Anything for Love."
Share your opinions, do you agree, do you not agree? What do you like about my build, what would you do? Please share!

How about Bard / Arcane Trickster? He is not overly magical, but he can set up tricks and sleights of hand.
The Urchin's "know this area like the back of my hand" feature, applied to the Opera House and tunnels below, would fit perfectly. He blitzes Christine down to the lake despite being pursued by Raoul and the Angry Mob, beats them all there despite her resistance. In the book, he might also be a Criminal. He is not a professional killer, but rather an intimidator and confidence man. Who is also a musical genius with an ear for perfect pitch.
Instead of a normal Tool Kit, he is proficient with Theater Stage Gear.
He doesn't need a very high STR, because he had his Magical Lasso hooked over a high rafter and a set of counter-weights ready to drop on the other end - that is how he hanged the fat guy. He is striken with a disease or birth defect that cannot be cured, so his CON can't be too high either. Much of his innate strength goes to compensating for the effects of the wasting disease on his body. I agree about the high CHR, but would edit your comment that he persuades a girl who desperately wants a man in her life (her father recently died) that he is the one she seeks.
P.S. I saw the play in Toronto, not the movie.

I too was struck by Michael Crawford's phantom and have to agree that when it comes to theatrical portrayal, he's where it's at. Now, having said that...

The musical's Phantom is smart enough to NOT walk out into the light or the middle of a room; he hides behind a mirror and speaks from there. He has CHR 16 at L1 because of his willpower and ability to manipulate other peoples' feelings. He also is a rules lawyer at heart, since he writes carefully phrased letters to the Managers of the Theater explaining what he wants them to do and why it would be a good idea to turn his advice into action.

You know which traps have been triggered &c. A level or two of this class will allow you to save build points on INT.
