So I got bored and extrapolated some levels, up to 36th level, which used to be a significant number in BECMI. I'm sure this has been done before, but Here Ya go.

XP. . . . . . . . .Level. . ..Prof. Bonus. . . .Attribute Gain

If you are concerned nothing could challenge characters this high level, I have some stories to share.

Traditionally, between level 20 and 30, you get access to 10th level spells, and somewhere around level 35 you get access to 11th level spells, possibly higher, depending on the Campaign. Wish is normally the most potent magic a mortal can cast, however, at 20th level, epic boons can make a person immortal, so that gets thrown out the window - you are only "mortal" if you are still choosing to be mortal, but that no longer has an impact on your maximum spell casting power.

DM's may instead opt for Immortal rules at this point rather than True Dweomers or Archmagic If that is the case, you can convert 1000 5th edition Experience points into 1 Power Point. When you have earned between 300 power points and 500 power points, you may begin a Quest assigned by a Patron Immortal/Deity and if you perform well, you then switch to the Gold Book Immortal Rules, or whatever your campaign decides. Approximately 12,000-15,000 power points is the same as a Greater God, for what it's worth. The other god levels are between those two figures (500 and 15,000). A level 36 following the above table, for instance would be the same as 2,400 power points, and the XP requirement for an Epic Boon translates to 30 power points.

If instead you want to pursue Archmagic, I recommend your Relevant Attribute (Charisma, Intelligence, Wisdom, etc.) meet a minimum requirement for the Spell level, equal to double:

Spell Level. . .Min Attribute to Cast

9th or less. . . . . . .no Minimum

10th. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 20 (Dragon King spells)

11th. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 22 (volcano spells)

12th. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 24 (Spells that target gods)

13th. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 26 (Apocalyptic spells, Tome of Mighty Magic)

14th. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 28 (Tome of Mighty Magic)

15th. . . . . . . . . . . . . . 30 (Tome of Mighty Magic)

16th+. . . . . . . . . . . . . 32+ (spells that require a deity to cast)

Wow, talk about flashbacks. Grab that dusty Record Player, put on some of that old mustachioed acid rock-metal with the heavy bass, and go get yourself a Draeden

That looks real good for one style of play.  I would like a progression where attribute, hp, and proficiency bonus does not increase.  But I do think you captured the feel of BECMI quite well.  And I really did enjoy the quests for immortality back in the day.  I would play something like this.  I really don't like spells higher than 9th level.  But I do like wizards getting better at manipulating their spells.  Same for the Fighter, I can see additional fighting styles for them, thieves whose stealth is on par with invisibility or Batman whichever is better.

I have to say that getting to level 20 and going beyond is what makes this game. After all how do we get Immortals or Gods if we can not even challenge them.

This game should challenge the players and spark the GM's imagination to the fullest.  The chart is only the begining and I see great things from later books and even the ideas out of forums like this.

The DMG presents a servicable option for players who want to keep running a PC after capping 20th, saying the DM can set XP or story thresholds whereat the PCs gain an "epic power", which can be anything that gets the greenlight from the DM. But honestly, the impulse to play past 20th seems misguided. You're already casting wish, killing balors, challenging god-tier dragons, etc. What more do you need?

People sometimes get this idea that "epic" can only be properly represented by some sort of additional set of rules that invariably break the PHB level cap, typically for no other reason than to fight ginned-up versions of MM beasties or arbitrarily upscale their scope and range of influence.

If I'm being honet, I think "epic" begins at 11th, and "divine" (if any such rules could work) would begin after capping at 20th, using the DMG's optional Epic Boons rules (which could be renamed to Salient Divine Abilities, or whatever). This makes CR 11+ monsters "epic" while making CR 21+ monsters "god-tier" monsters (and they are). The rules for encounters mean god-tier monsters will never be easy encounters for PCs (and they shouldn't be).

Anyway, I'm not trying to threadcrap. I just think a lot of time and effort can be spared by seeing the tiers of power that way, rather than trying to somehow compile material for 21+ gameplay that doesn't require a shoehorn or a blowtorch.

If you’re going to have power for spell casters, there should be an option for other classes as well.

Rogues that can be invisible at will or change their appearance at will.

Enraged barbarian’s that can smite a large building or perhaps small mountain later with a single blow.

Fighters that can spin through and attack all foes once within 100 feet, later attack entire armies.
