Light Crossbow... Doesn't exist

So the Fighter's starting equipment includes a "Light Crossbow and 20 bolts". But we don't have rules for a light crossbow; only heavy crossbow and hand crossbow.

Has WotC mentioned any intention to patch the Basic PDF about this?

It does. Check the simple weapons category.

"Crossbow, Light - 25 gp - 1d8 piercing 5 lb Ammunition (range 80/320), loading, two-handed"

P. 45, first weapon in Simple Ranged Weapons.

I put my high stat in Charisma...

Can't I just play some music and you dance and drink?

Ah. I didn't realize it was a simple weapon. Heavy and Hand crossbows are both martial, so it didn't occur to me that the middle ground would be simple. Weird.

Wasn't it the case in European History that it was easier to train soldiers to use the crossbow than the longbow?

They probably made heavy crossbow martial just because it does more damage, and hand crossbows because they seem unusual.

Who knows?

I wouldn't try to make too much sense out of the weapons table.

My evaluation of Light/Hand/Heavy is a comparison to modern day weapons.

Almost anyone can use a shotgun (Light crossbow).

Rifles take training to aim more accurately than a shotgun (heavy crossbow), and you can muzzle flash the hell out of yourself with a pistol (hand crossbow).

Is this explanation an oversimplification? absolutely!

But if you look at the physical usage of the weapons and how they reload, you'll see that a light crossbow simply requires you to grab the string and pull it back to the latch. The heavy crossbow has a freaking wench on it that you have to crank. And hand crossbows... careful or you'll shoot yourself in the foot, mate.

Tactical firearms training - that's a feat I want to see. ;)
