first of,
Greataxe! You shouldn't be punished for character concept by having less damage than other martial, no reach, no speacial two handers. Like maul and greatsword. so;
also damage of versatile one handed martial weapons. As is it now there is no penalty for using rapier and dex over warhammer, longsword, battleaxe with str.
this will give less disadvantage to small character that want a two hander, and a small reason to pick str over dex as main stat.
edit: added trident to the list.

it's ok that the glaive and the halberd have the same stats. there's no reason for the glaive to arbitrarily be a d8 finesse weapon. |

Here is how I would do weapons.
Step 1. Choose Damage Type bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing
Step 2. Choose handedness 1 handed: d8 base damage 2 handed: d12 base damage
Step 3. Choose properties (optional) reach (reduce base damage one step) simple (reduce base damage one step) finesse (reduce base damage one step) thrown (reduce base damage one step) ranged (reduce base damage one step)
Step 4: Describe your weapon You might call your two handed finesse reach weapon a spiked chain while somoene else calls theirs a naginata. You might call your two handed finesse weapon a flamberge while someone else calls thiers a katana. You might call your one handed finesse weapon a rapier while someone else calls theirs a shortsword.
Note: versatile, light, and heavy properties no longer exist. They really aren't needed at all. |

While he specifically speaks about Armor and not Weapons, it's safe to say that not all equipment is meant for PCs to use and/or is for "worst case scenarios".
Mike Mearls: @Kez_Darksun yes - padded and ring are bad, cheap armors meant for militia, poorly equipped warriors, not really aimed at PCs. |
| #11VeleriaSep 16, 2014 14:13:57 | Greataxe exists not as a punishment but as a gift to players who don't care about a fraction of a point of damage and just like to roll the biggest single damage die. Not all players are math obsessed. If given the option to roll a d20 or 2d10 they would choose the d20. The great axe and great sword exist to make 2 different player types happy. If a player wants to make the axe 2d6 there is nothing wrong with it but don't punish players that prefer the d12 either.
The he only weapon that really needs a change IMHO is the trident which should be d8 not versatile. That would balance it with other martial weapons and allow it to be thrown without overpowering other martial weapons. |

Personally I'm not a fan I like having weapons that are strictly inferior for monster and when you lose your weapon but that one is around or the like. Personally I think maces should be martial and on par with longswords and clubs should be the work horse of simple. Also I like d12s better than 2d6, because 2d6 is more reliable, but you're less likely to do max damage than with a d12. (1/36 chance vs 1/12 chance). |
