| #1OrwellianHaggisNov 01, 2014 4:14:53 | We're planning to play on Sunday. My wife will DM (she wants to have a go at it) and I will control four first-level PCs. These are detailed below.
The Boy
A human (variant) fighter wearing mail armour and wielding a long sword. Fighting style: dueling. Background: noble, with three retainers. Feat: savage attacker.
He left his family claim behind to pursue the life of the sword. His father denounced him, but three servants followed him into exile out of loyalty and love for the young master. He struggles with the shame he's brought on his family and will do anything to defend their honour and restore himself in their good graces.

| #2OrwellianHaggisNov 04, 2014 14:28:51 | Our first session took place on Sunday night. Everything went smoothly, my wife did a good job running the game from the book and dealt well with me and my steamroller ways (I'm used to being DM so once or twice I sort of took over describing events and enemy actions, apparently).
Three of my four characters drove Gundren's wagon straight in to the ambush (the fourth, the archer, is paranoid at the best of times and was scouting through the woods. Unfortunately he didn't notice the goblins before they sprung their attack). One goblin attacked each character, three rushing into melee with one shooting at the archer. The mage and the archer took damage, and in return only the girl managed to wound her attacker.
In the second round the mage was knocked to 0hp, as was the archer. The goblins chose not to kill them but went through their pockets and stole what money they had (about 20gp). The girl killed her goblin using her Lucky feat and moved up to help the boy, who wounded his attacker.
In round three the goblin standing over the archer turned to shoot at the girl, and missed. The boy killed his opponent and moved to help the mage while the girl took on the goblin that had felled him. Using another of her Lucky points she wounded that goblin.
Round four saw the girl kill the third goblin using her final Lucky point. Seeing the tide of battle going against it, the fourth goblin withdrew. I've forgotten the exact order of things here, but the archer self-stabilised where he was lying in the woods.
Rather than pursue the final goblin, the conscious members of the party decided to drive on to Phandalin to recover and discuss what they should do next. They procured a room (we haven't actually decided where, yet) and I'm planning on having them all eager to take on the goblin bandits.
The session ended here and we discussed how we thought it had gone. My wife pointed out my over-eager moments and I explained how I like to view my characters in-game (basically at one point the archer had rolled a 1 on a stealth check, and she'd described him "walking into a tree or something". I see the archer as being quite the experienced woodsman, and overruled her, describing the result differently. That moment came very close to ending the game early, but we got through it). Overall we both had fun and my wife gained some confidence in her ability to run the game, so we're calling it a successful hour of gaming. |
