#1 NinjaButter Dec 11, 2014 15:24:58	I just got the DMG a few days ago and thought I would try my hand at a sentient magic item for fun. I was inspired by another person's post on this site as they described a magic book that ate other books. I fiddled with it a bit and (ta-DA!) Hungar, Eater of Lore was born. Let me know how it looks and if it seems balanced compared to other sentient items in the DMG.   Hungar, Eater of Lore Wondrous item, legendary (requires attunement to a wizard) Hungar, Eater of Lore is a cannibalistic sentient book which seeks out and consumes other books, absorbing bits and pieces of their lore in the process. It appears to be a black leather-bound volume of considerable thickness with a boarder of polished ivory. Its pages look to have been taken from a number of books all bound into a single haphazard tome.                 Even without attunement, by perusing Hungar's pages for 10 minutes with a person, place, or object in mind, you can make an Intelligence (History) check with advantage related to the subject. Additionally, it can be read for simple enjoyment; its seemingly endless pages containing a multitude of forgotten and unique works of literature.                 Spellbook: Hungar may act as a spellbook for a wizard attuned to it, and its pages are filled with every wizard spell in the Player's Handbook. At the DM's discretion, unique or esoteric spells may also be found among Hungar's many pages. Unfortunately, these spells have minor imperfections in their scribing which prevents them from being used as rituals or being copied into another spellbook or ritual book. In addition, preparing and casting such a spell may result in unforeseen consequences. If you prepare a spell using Hungar you must roll a d20 when you cast it. If the result of the roll is equal to or less than the level of the prepared spell, a wild magic event occurs in addition to the spell's normal effect. Roll on the sorcerer Wild Magic Surge table, ignoring a result of 99-00.                 Legendary Lore: While attuned, you can use Hungar, Eater of Lore to cast the legend lore spell once per day with the information resulting from the spell appearing on new pages within its binding. Using this ability requires no material components.                 Sentience. Hungar is a sentient neutral tome with an Intelligence of 10, a Wisdom of 10, and a Charisma of 10. It has hearing and darkvision out to a range of 120 feet. Hungar can read any language and, when attuned, translates all text within its binding into languages known by its owner.                 The tome communicates by transmitting emotions, sending a tingling sensation to its owner when it wants to communicate something it has sensed. It can communicate more explicitly through the content of the pages that appear while the owner casually flips through it. Otherwise, it remains motionless and unassuming while being observed. This is believed to be a "trick" it learned from its original owner. Only the occassional sound of it lurching around and its ability to appear in new locations betrays its mobility.                 Personality. Hungar is very simpleminded—by sentient item standards—and longs for little more than to be read by its owner and allowed to eat the occasional book or two.                 The tome was originally created to serve as a lonely wizard's animated spellbook. Unfortunately, when the wizard died, Hungar was unknowingly donated with other books that belonged to the wizard to a large library. It was during this period of time it gorged itself on centuries-old historical records and priceless documents, gaining its "Eater of Lore" moniker. Since then it has managed to find its way into the possession of various owners.                 Hungar, Eater of Lore does not feed on books for sustenance. However, if left unsupervised in a room with other books, it will prey upon 1d4 random books in a single 24 hour period. All that remains of such books are a few scraps of savaged paper. If it feels it is being ignored, Hungar may jealously lash out and prey upon books it perceives as rivals—such as a wizard's spellbook.
