Ive been reading a lot in preperation for Out of the Abyss.  In my research it appears that a Menzobberenzan supplement is released about every 2 edditons.  I think (and may be wrong) that Menzobberenzan was released for 2e and then again for 4e. skipping 1st and 3rd.  If im right then the pattern would emply that we will not see a 5e version.  My dilemma is that I don't want to purchase a 4e book only to find it replaced a year or two later by a 5e release but also don't want to wait for a release that never comes.

To those of you who have more experience with these kinds of supplements do you think that I would be safe purchaseing the 4e book as a reference for 5e or do you expect it to be released relativly soon?

Thanks

3.5 had the Underdark sourcebook, which covered Menzobberenzan.

I never got the 2e version but I heard good things.  I actually quite liked the 4e one.

I will also vote for 2nd Ed (superb boxed set).  I stick with the original book/boxed set for all settings, regardless of what actual edition rules I am using.  No Time of Troubles, Spellplague, Prism Pentad, Grand Conjunction, Faction War for me, thanks.

I have the original but it is set aroundf the early Drakelf novels circa The Legacy so the informationis out of date. I have not read the 4E one but I have the folloing.

Mezonberranzan boxed set (2E)

Drow of the Underdark (2E)

Underdark (3.5)

Drow of the Underdark (3.5)

The best one is probably the 2E Menzoberranzan. Generally I rate 2E fluff over the later editions although the 3E books by Eric L Boyd are very good. He wrote the Faiths and Avatars trilogy in 2E.

Genrally I find the originals stuff almost always better than the follow ups. so 1E Dragonlance/Greyhawk is better than 2E, 2E FR is better than 3E, which was better than 4E. Eberron was defined by 3E IMHO, Nerath was defined by 4E.

The 1E FR Grey Box seems to be more popular these days as well. I'm on the fence about freezing FR in time either around the FR Adventures Book (just after the time fo troubles) or somewhere around 1373-75 DR and the FRCS for 3.0 was very good. I'll probably start ignoring a lot of metaplot as a lot of settings were ruined by it IMHO with Eberron being a rare exception.

Its not so much being older automatically makes it better you just avoid the stupid metaplot decisions that often ruined whatever attracted you to the world in the 1st place. For example Darksun see this cool new world we have invented with The Dragon and Sorcerer Kings? 4 years later the Dragon is dead along with 4/7 SK's. IN Darksuns case the original authors moved on to other projects very early in the settings life cycle and there was no cohesion or organization with the freelancers that wrote the latter DS materials as TSR fell to pieces.

I wouldn't discount the 4e Menzo book though. It was written to be almost system agnostic, and unlike a lot of post 2e publications it stuck pretty closely to the source material (as far as I recall, anyway). It also might be easier to find a copy in good condition if you're looking for the physical book and not just a PDF.
