Monster Challenge Ratings

I've played and run in a number of 5e sessions so far and it's going very well, with one exception.   Combat still seems too easy, with many adventures ending with the players barely harmed at all.

Is there a formula for the CR of monsters for 5e, similar to what 4e had?

Something like:  one CR 1 monster = moderate challenge for one level 1 player.  

                          one CR 4 monster = moderate challenge for four level 2 players.

I read somewhere a CR1 creature would be a challenge for 4 lvl 1 characters. It should be a tough fight but not result in death.  It's in a Mearls L&L column on encounter design.
