I was reading 2e Player's Handbook the other night and was looking through the monster summoning spell I noticed a line which said that sometimes adventurers have been summoned by powerful spellcasters.

I'm curious if anyone has ever started an adventure this way with the players being summoned by a mighty mage to aid him against his foes.

Yup.  And the wizard kept doing it over and over again, until the PCs tracked down and killed the wizard.  The wizard had somehow learned their true names.  It was a cool adventure back in the day.

Sort of. In my 3.5 campaign the PCs kept summoning a celestial bison, so for one adventure I had the owner of the bison summon the PCs to help find the bison a celestial mate. It was sort of a turn about is fair play.

I have not done it as a DM, but I have had it done to me as a player three times. I wasn't bothered by the mechanic, the point of playing the game is to get into an adventure anyway.

What if summoned creatures can be used to carry stones with magic runes, or bombs?

I love very much the idea about a module for monster pets/allies, but it would need a special XPs reward because it may breack the balance of game. I bet we will see it, because monster pets means more miniatures to be bought by players for warbands/skirmishes games.
