| #1DaganevAug 12, 2014 23:49:41 | I'm going to start working on a spreadsheet so I can sort monsters by CR and see their stas. However, before I start doing so, I wanted to make sure somebody has not allready done this. |
| #2Dark_StrykeAug 13, 2014 6:16:09 | There's a guy who goes by Surf who hangs out mostly on the DM forums who has a whole blog about this kind of number crunching, and he has already stated he intends to break down the monster math. I'm not sure if he's looking at their stats specifically (and by stats I assume you mean Str, Dex, Con, etc). |
| #3JoeVelociraptorAug 13, 2014 6:37:37 | Don't forget to add-in all the monsters from the just-released (as of 8/13/14) Basic DM Rules: http://media.wizards.com/2014/downloads/dnd/DMDnDBasicRules_v0.1_PrinterFriendly.pdf
And the monsters in the free Hoard of the Dragon Queen supplement: http://media.wizards.com/2014/downloads/dnd/HoardDragonQueen_Supplement1_PF.pdf
I'll try to help add some when I get some free time. |
| #4JoeVelociraptorAug 13, 2014 7:35:55 | I'm also working on one that collects Beast stats for Druid wildshaping, but between office work & Encounters character gen tonight, it might not get done for a couple days.
EDIT: You know what... there's no reason not to make it the same document. Added a tab for druid beast forms. Will populate it as time allows. |
| #5MarandahirAug 13, 2014 8:59:44 | I'm almost done with one that lists Monsters by CR, XP, HP, AC, Languages, Alignment, Movement, Type, and Size. |
| #6DaganevAug 13, 2014 9:26:15 | One thing I can't decide is if I should list attribute stats as 18 or just +4 for easier graph and number crunching I have two desires for an online sortable spreadsheet. 1. Make it easy for me to find monsters to use as a dm. 2. Make pretty graphs |
| #7DaganevAug 13, 2014 10:06:32 | Oh, I should probably add a column for special attacks that require saving throws |
| #8MarandahirAug 13, 2014 11:18:56 | Okay, I've now got a Calc spreadsheet written up. It doesn't do the stats and attributes things that Daganev's does, but all the columns can be seen on one page, making it easy to look at, and see relevant information about choosing monsters for a game (rather than running them – I'd suggest referring to the books or pdfs for that). |

| #15ReinhartAug 14, 2014 18:08:40 | Here's what I'm tracking: CR, XP, AC, HP, and then the saving throw mods for Dex, Con, and Wis. After that I also record the modifiers and expected damage for each of the creature's attacks and whether each is part of a multiattack or limited.
On another sheet, I'm putting together the expected defenses, attacks, DC's, expected damage values, and daily healing capacity of each of the Starter Set characters for each level according to the Basic rules. After that, I can generate on-level encounters for each creature, the expected duration of such encounters, and the average number of actions that the enemies take during that encounter. Knowing how many actions the monsters get means I can generate an expected amount of damage that it brings against the party.
If the math is well balanced then this expected damage should be roughly proportional to the hitpoints and healing potential of heroes for that CR. After that I repeat the process using the same monsters for lower or higher level encounters. The balance of the current monsters isn't looking very good at the moment, but the numbers I generate can become guidlines that someone like Surf can use when generating their own monsters. |
