Hey everyone!
I have been working on a few things, and it has come time for me to look at magic items. It is important to me that every PC scales similarly. As it stands right now, moon druids and monks don't have a way to scale their attack bonus, and barbarian and monk AC scaling is/can be even with light and heavy armor scaling with magic armor. Magic shields gum things up more.
But then I got to thinking about item attunement. Item attunement limits choices, making someone choose between an offensive, defensive, or sometimes utilitarian item. This is good. I like it.
But now I'm wondering what would happen if you gave characters two more attunement "slots" but made generic magic weapons, armor, and shields require attunement too. I'm looking at this to help even out AC scaling between classes (though I question if AC scales too slowly, since monster AC scales with player attack yet monster attack outpaces player AC), and to help balance my desired two-weapon fighting changes (remove the bonus action requirement, but limit magic items a bit so twfing isn't overpowered by certain magic weapons; that would be a choice of offense over defense at that point).
Mostly, I'm just doing some theory crafting at this point. Thoughts?

| (Reply to #2)TiaNadiezja | Honestly? I'm mostly annoyed that 5e didn't take the opportunity it had available to finally put a knife into the enhancement bonus once and for all. The enhancement bonus means that everyone has to have a way to scale attack bonuses, and punishes things like Moon Druids and unarmed monks that don't because for some reason nobody put items that do that into the DMG.
Magic items should do a thing, not give a boring +x. This edition made them optional by balancing around an assumption of +0 and reigning in the maximum enhancement bonus, but it missed the chance to kill them off entirely. |

It doesn't "correct" player AC vs. monster attack scaling to the point that monster AC scales with player attack.
Tempest_Stormwind, I honestly haven't read all of the magic items in full to know whether I'd want any items to be without attunement. Potions and scrolls obviously. Wands ... maybe attunement would be nice. I also find it odd that casters don't have much to boost their spell attacks and spell DCs, but it seems that there isn't much to boost saving throws either. |
