| #1LawolfSep 24, 2014 10:12:20 | So one thing I actually liked about 4e style feats were the multiclass feats. These feats gave players a way to get the flavor of a multiclass but in a much lighter way than if they were to hybrid or take a class level in a different class.
Here are some thoughts about multiclass feats for 5e.
Note: You cannot take a multiclass feat for a class you already belong to. You cannot take more than a single multiclass feat.
Way of the Fury - barbarian multiclass (req Str 13)
Way of the Warrior - fighter multiclass (req Str 13)
Way of the Sneak - rogue multiclass (req Dex 13)
Way of the Fist - monk multiclass (req Dex 13)
Way of the Crusader - paladin multiclass (req Cha 13)
Way of the Wild - ranger multiclass (req Wis 13)

Not sure how well balanced that will be, particularly for Variant Humans. For example spellcasters can get the main benefit of a Fighter dip without sacrificing any spellcasting whatsoever. |

| #4rampantSep 24, 2014 10:32:02 | Yeah these are a bit OP, The concept is workable but many of the classes will need to be broken down into smaller chunks, and thus cost more feats.
FOr example the armor and weapon profs are probably not needed, there's already feats for those.
SOme of the feats might warrant 1-2 weapon profs, but all martial is not a thing that is needed, even for the fighter multi-class. |

| #7rampantSep 24, 2014 10:57:53 | IF you think giving up a class level isn't a big deal you have not been looking at the capstone powers.
BArbarian gets +4 to two stats, even if you don't get to use it much, that's still awesome.
HOw about for fighter:
1 simple or martial weapon of your choice 1 fighting style 1 fighter skill 1 armor or shield prof
then maybe an advanced feat would give you the ability to make a an extra attack or two between short rests/

Magic Initiate and the one that gives you a superiority die and a maneuver (I've forgotten its name). Creating more feats using those as examples helps maintain the power level and presents lower risk of going off the the rails into unexpected territory. They aren't as comprehensive, but they do let you dabble into features of other classes or subclasses, and if you want to go a bit more, that's where a level in the other class comes in.

I like the concept, but you need to start with a some balance guidelines, then apply those guidelines to each class.
For example, the 4e guidelines were membership in the class, skill training, implement use and daily power. Each of these were then heavily tied to the class's role. MC feats that were over budget were fairly obvious because they gave you more (e.g. Battle Awareness and Master of Stories pre-nerf).
This will be challenging to do in 5e because classes lack a defined role. Also, membership in a class doesn't really get you anything. Feats like Magic Initiate and the one that gives you maneuvers and superiority dice are your best frame of reference for how those would look in 5e. |
| #14RCanineSep 24, 2014 13:13:13 | Also, proficiency in one martial weapon and proficiency in all martial weapons are functionally equivalent since 90% of pcs will use either one weapon or a pair of matched weapons. |

| #16rampantSep 24, 2014 14:07:24 | The big reason not to hand out all weapons is that the wapon prof feat only gives four, and power creep is something to be aware of.
Also the bit about only using one weapon i really just more reason that the 1 weapon is the only one you need.

| #18RamzourSep 25, 2014 1:06:24 | Your feats seem way overpowered. Most of them are measureably more powerful than the existing feats. Also, the PHB pretty much already has what you want with the existing feats in the book. There's no need to make new ones.
Want to be a caster without multiclassing? Take the Magic Initiate or Ritual Caster feat. Want to be a warrior without multiclassing? Take the Weapon Master, Sharpshooter, Tough, or any of the armor feats. Want to be more skilled or sneaky without multiclassing? Take Dungeon Delver, Skilled, or Skulker feat. And there are a lot more.
Is this identical to taking 1 level in another class? No. But it does give you the feel of a caster or a warrior or whatever, without having to multiclass or make up new (probably unbalanced) feats. If you REALLY want those exact class features, then multiclass. Easy! |

Sorry Lawolf I randomly clicked any thread to yell that. |

| #29Sailing_Pirate_RyanSep 26, 2014 6:52:00 | I've thought about doing this myself, but I think the OP's feats are too focused on providing Proficiencies. As others have noted, there are already feats for that.
Where these sorts of feats would shine is in providing limited access to class features. A feat that grants Unarmored Defense like the barbarian one works without the Proficiencies or Rage. Bring back the name Iron Hide, give a +1 to Dex or Con as well, and I think it works. A feat for the Monk version, too, with a +1 to Wis instead of Con. Things like that. I'd only include weapon Proficiencies on the Fighting Style feat, but even then I'd probably prefer a +1 Str or Dex instead.
It'd be tricky to provide these options without introducing broken combos now that the playtest is over, but the concept is viable for DMs willing to risk it. |
| #30Brock_LandersSep 26, 2014 6:56:46 | To the OP: you seem to have a disdain for all D&D that is not 4th Ed, why are you trying to contort 5th Ed into your version of 4th Ed? |
| #311eejitSep 26, 2014 7:01:56 | It's just a bad idea imo. Class features are that for a reason, you should have to pay the established price of delaying progression in your main class when dipping if you want them.
Gishes shouldn't be able to get Fighting Styles for the low, low cost of a feat and retain full spell progression for example. Nor should a Barbarian get TWF so handily.
Some aren't really unbalanced but they 'steal flavour' from classes in a way I don't like. What's the point in a Hunter Ranger when a Rogue or Fighter can pick up the a favoured terrain enemy so easily? |
