Over the last 1.5 weeks or so I hae managed to show my starter set to most of the group and run a couple of seesiosn for some of them and they made it to level 3.

One of the monsters has however grabbed my attention and will likely be a major villain in may game. That race is the infamous classic D&D monster- the humble Hobgoblin. Put simply they are going to be a major plotline of my game and the theme is probably going to be one of brutality.

I had an interesting conversation today and it was baiscally that Hobgoblins should be able to take over the world or at least a decent size  empire if you gave a few of them pikes. You could even have them use tercio or landsknect taactics form real life as Hobgoblins carry long bows and you could scatter a few greatsword users among them. At higher level (5-6) instead of leveling them up you could just use more hobgoblins and have pike formations of them backed up by ranged weapons. It gets even more brutal if the PCs lack a wizard.

And of course the Hobgoblin leader is charismatic, intelligent and is a Grand Admiral Thrawn/Saladin/ Caeser/Belisarius type figure- a military genius. Doesn't even have to be evil just smart enough to train his followers in human type tactics and equip his soldiers with pikes, longbows and great swords. If PCs charge the hobgoblins they provoke AoO from the massed ranks due to reach on the pikes, if they sit there the Hobgoblin archers volly fire while the pikemen advance as in 5E they all use the same initititve rolls. Bugbears and Ogres can be iused as heavy assault infantry or something.

I also want to work Tiamats cult in there somewhere since I do not have the PHB yet or the Dragon adventures. So I can have 2 factions interested in power (annexing human lands). I may also want to duplicate this battle here with the Hobgoblins being the English but may start the campaign after the battle with the kingdom/empire stunned at a defeat to humanoids that they actually outnumbered.

If anyone here can win the HYW in EUIV with 9000 Englishmen please LMK BTW.
