My book is breaking.

I ordered my book from Amazon, and got it a week after they were released, so I've had it just over a month.  The section from Paladin to Warlock has broken free from the binding and is preparing to fall completely out of the book.  I was wondering if I just got a bad copy, or if there was a bad batch, and whether I should ask Amazon or Wotc for a replacement.  It's barely been a month, I don't think I've made so many characters that it should be wearing out already.

There have been other sporadic reports of bad binding, so it's likely there was a bad batch. Try to return it.

check to see if you can still return it, amazon has a limited number of days for returns/exchanges. Its possible that you have a book that is poorly made. So far both my PHB and MM have been doing great and are both very solidly bound, so I think yours is the exception and not the rule.

EN world has an article on some issues to look for on the MM, so if you plan on getting that I recommend you go here

I got 2 PHBs and one is holding up fine but the other started having issues like you describe (I returned it to the local store and got a replacement - which is holding up fine).

You should be able to return it to Wizards for a replacement if Amazon gives you any trouble.

I bought a PHB and the pages in the spells section began to fall out in large chunks after about 3 weeks of ownership.

I was lucky I was still in the return window. My replacement PHB seems to be ok.

Ditto.  I did an order for my whole group, 4 books.  Of the 4 one came with glue on some pages that caused issues and another had the binding fail.  I was able to send back the broken one to amazon no charge.  Also every book had some issues with faded text.  It wasn't bad enough to cause real issues but was very dissapointing.

I got one of the bad ones, but I sent it back in, so it should be in process of being replaced. I'm just glad that most of them are fine and it was just a bad batch or two.

I just RMA'd my PHB last night.  I was flipping thru it and the binding came undone,  Amazon has a replacement on its way.

I hope you're able to get a replacement. I'm using my second book, after my first fell apart in the same fashion as your book. I was able to return mine. This is a widely reported issue, and clearly more than a bad batch. I'd say there were likely a number of "bad batches".

The sad thing for me is that my first book was beautiful, in terms of text clarity and vibrant artwork. The second features poorly printed text and drab, lifeless artwork. I wouldn't be able to imagine the difference in the art had I not seen it. The binding of the second is better, but not great. I really hope they improve the quality of the binding and printing for future releases.

About a quarter of my book pages fell out. I thought it was because I left it open in the heat but apparently this is more of product quality issue than abuse. I've never had anything like happen before.

I'v had mine a month or so and yeah the binding has failed, so about half of the pages can just fall out.

Ya, pages from my copy from Amazon fell out too.

I also have glue.

Not saying you shouldn't try to returns yours. You're entitled to it, since you got a bad product. Me, I've got some industrial strength adhesive here, and those pages haven't fallen out since. I'm also incredibly lazy, and value function over form.

Yes, pages of my Player's Handbook fell away from the binding in large swaths in the first month as well. I super glued them back, still 'functional', but annoying nevertheless. At times, I find myself handling the Monster Manual with kid gloves without thinking.

My second just fell apart a few days ago.

My first lastest about three weeks and I was ultra careful with it, never laying it flat out. I returned it. The store was good, even though they had a two week return policy. You can't imagine how careful I was with the second copy. Now... it too has fallen apart.

Hmm, I've had mine since the early release day, and so far it's holding up, but sometimes I think I hear very soft "cracking" sounds when I flip through it.

Problem is, I bought it from one of my FLGS's around here and stupidly threw the receipt away, so if mine does end up falling apart, I'm probably out of luck with the store. I've heard some people have been contacting WotC directly with this issue and it seems like there have been mixed results.

I have the same problem with my PHB and MM. The binding of the books are terrible, the pages are very poorly glued. This is a major production flaw, I'm very disappointed, a major company in the industry should have better quality control.

I can't even ask my local dealer for a replacement because they are out of stock (I'm living in Europe) and won't be able to restock before january 2015.

my group has had no such issues, but still every book we have bought so far has the same issue of being improperly bound

resulting in bent covers and pages that just refuse to be flat.

considering the price, and the fact that i have bought many books of this type, some at lower cost, some even from this same WotC

that had no such problems, i have to say i feel we all got screwed. clearly this is a quality control issue brought on by greed.

(i have worked in the industry and i know what i'm talking about, so save the excuses)

the fact that none of the books are entirely proper is bad for WotC's reputation, what you guys are having is F******ing unacceptable.

you deserve an apology and a coupon for free pdf versions of every book.

in the words of ralph garmen (imitating sylvester stallone) :

"that's greedy and lazy!!"

are you reading this WotC?

do you even want to survive paizo?

Yep, the book my neighbor got was literally glued closed so when he opened it the first time it ripped apart. He returned it to Amazon. The second book he got came with a dinged cover and a severely bent corner as well as some ink transfer within on some ajacent pages. The quality control issues are way below what I expect from wotc after 15 years of making D&D hardbacks. I am watching my own two copies which I hand picked at my flgs for issues. It's as if wotc didn't care about their product and chose the lowest bid for a printing contract. Then at $50 per book passed the crap on to us. It's just sad.

I ordered my PHB and MM online through Barnes & Noble and both are in perfect shape with no problems showing so far....

But I can imagine only too well how upset so many are when their new books start falling apart, etc.

Oh yes, that. What's going on here is a mix up of two issues. The DMG wasn't delayed because of bad printing. It was delayed due to "an entire additional cycle of design and editing to ensure that the books were as close to perfect as humanly possible." The DMG hasn't been to the printers at all yet. Still in development.

Heh, wotc has had so many issues with their 5e line thus far- I suppose the confusion was because two topics were included in the same article. Either way it's a good thing for both the Adventure path and the DMG. Hopefully the delay prevents more quality control problems in the future of the line. So it's the Tyranny of dragons module that has printing issues and was pushed back because of them. The DMG just plain isn't ready on time and needs refinement so it's being delayed as well.

Yeah. The delay in the DMG really makes me happy. A lot of us are hoping for an awful lot out of it, and the fact that the designers are deciding to spend an extra 2-3 weeks seeing if there is anything they can fix or improve should be great for the final outcome of a book that we'll be using for years.

I too have high hopes- and sadly low expectations. I am going to buy it, but that may be the end of my 5e purchases. You know what I mean?

Sounds like an Amazon batch issue? I picked mine up at a Barnes & Noble store here in SoCal with no problems. Yet. Getting the MM today from the same store.

Man, I thought my book was one of the OK ones but a chunk of pages that had started to stick out just fell right out when I held it open cover-up. D-X Well, at least if it gets replaced I can get a second chance to add annotations in ink that doesn't smudge. That turned out to be a mistake.

Mine has just started to fall apart; I'm assuming it's way too late to ask for an exchange through Amazon, as I bought it the first month.

My PHB now has a section that fell out too. 3/4 years, but still too soon for it to start showing such problems.
