So on the right side of page 73 of the PHB, in the fighter subclasses section, theres that picture of a man at arms and wizard fighting what appears to be possibly a hydra, or maybe sea serpant. At the bottom of that tapestry are runes. I first I thought it was drawven runes, but it doesnt match up the the sample alphabeta in the PHB (Which I thought was awesome to include, as now im playing with making some words/phrases but besides the point). I dont suppose any one recgonizes what the runes are, their origin, or if there is a trasnlation of that at all?

As for translation, I know other passages have been hunted down and it's been revealed the artist just hit random letters on the keyboard or wrote some variation of: Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum
It would have been a cool (and easy) way to include some neat stuff in the PHB. It appears WotC chose not to bother though.
thats really diasapointing. I dont suppose some tolkien dwarven speaking friend can tell us if that means something? I am under the impression that it probably doesnt mean anything. I agree that it would have been really simple to include fun stuff. hell anything arthurian would have been awesome. Call the Wizard merlin and your all done. Huh....actually, an Arthurian themed game could be pretty fun. Ireland becomes home of dwarfs(dwarves? im never sure how to write it as a plural), wales might be halfings and elves......I am going to go look at some maps now

It's the text of the Know Lore spell, which is a Domain Spell that Clerics of the Knowledge domain get at 11th level. It's not listed in the PHB because, well, if you're any good as a Cleric of Knowledge, you don't need to be spoon-fed do you?
If you read the inscription, you will know how to cast the spell that enables you to read the inscription.

I'm going to put that tapestry - with a REAL caption, probably inspired by ... drat, I forget the name, the tapestry that shows King Harold the Saxon getting an arrow in the eye with explanatory text underneath ... on my list of "Rich Peoples' Cool Loot".
