New 5E Campaign Setting?

Previous editions of D&D have offered us some great campaign settings: Greyhawk, Mystara, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Dark Sun, Planescape, Eberron, Nentir Vale, etc. Do you think 5e will provide us with any new "official" campaign setting(s)?

Doubtful.   5e is the "back to basics" edition, so there's a huge emphasis on updating old material.    If anything, they'll probably provide a few suggestions for running new style of campaigns rather than inventing entire new settings for it.

4e gave us campaign settings and player's guides for the Realms, Eberron, and Dark Sun but that was it; no ongoing products like we saw during 2e and 3e (and 3e gave us FR and Eberron products only).  So, it's nice that the entire D&D multiverse is being embraced this time around.

I'm absolutely thrilled to see things like the Dawn War pantheon being mentioned in the DMG. So many D&D worlds are mentioned by name.  The expected ones (FR, Dragonlance, Dark Sun) but also some unexpected ones (like Mystara and Birthright).

Will we see something new?  Something unique to 5e?  I hope so.  Because with this mindset, it would be a great time to add something to D&D, something that could be with us for as long as Greyhawk and Blackmoor.

I get excited thinking about it.  Then I worry about the business side of things: budgets, staffing, all that jazz.  I s'pose they could out-source it to a third-party like the adventures.  Who knows?

It is possible, but my opinion is a new world could be used not only for the rpg but also another Hasbro line: the action figures toys. Another idea could be to recover the islands of the dragons from "Council of Wyrns" like a demiplane, or the chronomancer to create parallel "reboots" of the canon settins.

I remember that Keith Baker's Eberron was the winner of a compettion, and there were another finalists weren´t public yet.

Maybe eventually, but for the time being there are too many things already in storage that need updated / re-done for D&D5.  I don't realistically expect them to update Gamma World to 5e for several years, because demand is too low (alas).  New-brand material will be even lower on the to-do list than that.

A new World would have to have something that just sticks out as a "not your father's Oldsmobile !" quality.  Without stomping all over your future royalties, how would you explain what that something is, and persuade WotC to push it up the priority list?

I hope we get a new campaign setting, but if we do get one I think it will be detailed in articles in something like Dragon+ instead of having a book dedicated to it.

But, it's no skin off my back either way.  During its run D&D has put out settings that I like and/or love (Ravenloft, Planescape, Spelljammer, and Eberron), and I have my two homebrew settings to play in as well.

I do a setting that integrates science fiction with fantasy.  I have pistols doing 1d6 and rifles 1d12.  The setting is Earth between 200,000 BC and about 70,000 BC.  Starships are built and the galaxy has been colonized.  Earth has many empires that each have several colonies throughout the galaxy.  At the same time there is great political intrigue between Giants, Faerie, Genies, Demons and Angels.  There is alot of equipment and technology that duplicates what magic can do, but it is expensive and needs repaired and can be damaged easily.  My favorite planets are the twin planets of Sodom and Gamorah that orbit each other around a star called Gehenna.  The planets are a place with very few laws and many spaceports.  A place of gambling, drinking, and womanizing.  The Ormanian Empire is ruled by a powerful empire that also has the Ormanian church with powerful Ormanian Knights that try to spread justice throughout the galaxy.  Night hags trade in human souls and Rakshasa run the underworld.

Cybernetic humans are present, but most religions forbid the merging of men and machine, so they are pretty much their own race, the same thing with eugenics.  Many because of religious beliefs will not participate in Eugenics or cybernetics.  Unseelie elves openly trade for your soul in certain area's because they have a tithe to pay to Hell every seven years, and they would rather give someone else's sould rather than their own children.  Corruption is rampant, evil operates in the open in many cases as long as free will is not violated, except in the case of slavery which is rampant and socially accepted.

The Ormanian Empire is in a great galactic war/cold war depending on events with Gog of thw intergalactic empire of Magog.

I would love a d20 Superheroes by WotC but I miss the clasic combats with ancient weapons like swords and shields.

About sci-fi now I don´t like so much. Let's imagine a civilitation being destroyed by the interestellar space equivalent of Patrick Sondheimer and the Germangwinges flight 9525.

To mixture sci-fi and fantasy is possible. You have only to remember the cartoon of "He-Man and the Master of the universe", like a mixture of Conan the Barbarian and Flash Gordon.

And today is the internet age. Now we don´t need to pay to get background when I can go to the wiki of comics, videogames, teleseries, movies.. I say again my opinion is the future new D&D world be used not only for the rpg but also to sell actions figures.

* Ihumanoids is Hasbro copyraight, isn´t it? maybe we could be a movie, or a videogame.   What about Visionaries: knights of the magical light? It could be worse, the D&D version of charmkins.

Does a pretty good job of making a campaign setting

I hope there will be more campaign setting sites like this and maybe some way to monatise it for al the work people put into it.

I just wish we could have a setting book. I know they have no plans for it but some people are too busy to make their own world. I miss campaign boxes and books nowadays.

My kneejerk reaction was no way, considering the glacial pace of releases and the newfound hyper attention to detail.  On second thought, the writing and overall quality has been so stellar, I could see a new campaign setting being very fine, indeed.

Maybe they'll have a contest like they did when Eberron won.

We'll be lucky if we even get a Forgotten Realms Campaign setting book for 5th edition. At the rate of the release schedule so far for 5th edition I'm guessing we will see the FR Campaign setting book sometime around 2018.

While 5e does seem to be going for a bit of a retro feel I think they'll want a new setting eventually, assuming it lasts, although I think they'd be better off dusitng off some of the older worlds and updating things a bit to start with, I'm still kind of irked we never got that 4e planescape book.

That said what would be a good concept for a 5e setting?

I'm thinking old-school fantasy, edgar rice burroughs meets jules verne meets micheal moorcock. Take some of the elements from Frankenstein, the invisible man, dr. jekyll and mr. hyde, and similar stories while we're at it.

There is power beyond the conventions of society but how much of ourselves do we loose when we try to grasp it? or is it not that we loose ourselves but reveal our truest self when wielding power? That kind of stuff. The masses huddle together in terrified ignorance seeking bliss, but those who step into the larger world can never fully come back for they are forever changed by their experiences. Beuatiful and terrible power is within our grasp if only one has the cunning to find it, and the will to tame it.

MOnsters lurk in shadows and put on mortal skin with the rising of the sun, ancient forces sleep fitfully beneath the surface, and alien empires look upon the mortal realm with avarice.

Hmmmmm gonna jot this down in the old notebook, this looks like a keeper.

I would like a teslapunk setting by WotC, like a d20 Leage of Extraordinary Getlemen (I loved the movie and I don´t mind Alan Moore's opinion about that), but that had to be a d20 Modern.

* Star Wars isn´t tech + magic, but tech + psionic powers. And I love to do a mad mixture, a crazy mash-up from all franchises (Star Wars, Star Treck, Andromeda, Mass Effect, Farscape, Flash Gordon..).

* I would like a d20 Superheroes by WotC, and public domain characters could be used, but it is a great challenge for game designers, to avoid a "Green Arrow vs Doomday". Maybe a special XP reward system, because the same monster, for example a dinosaur, can be more or less dangerous in a d20 Past or oa d20 Future campagin.

* I want the return of the coolest humanoid races from d20 Future and Gamma World.

I'm not sure we'll see a campaign setting from WotC themselves. We may get campaign settings from other publishers though. Campaign settings rarely need crunch (other than some NPC stat blocks, and maybe some magic items and monsters) so could probably easily be done once they've finalized their licencing/SRD agreements. If WotC does release any campaign books it'll likely be updates to existing settings to cover how 5e content works in them and in some cases update the settings for the "present day" like will have to be done with FR as it's last official updated campaign setting book is set before the Sundering. Some of those updates may even be licensed out just as they do with the adventure paths and with Fantasy Grounds for a VTT-type experience.

Psionics is just magic with psychobabble stapled onto it.

They should have some pretty stellar settings in hand and ready to develop. I mean, they at least have the runners-up for the contest which ultimately gave us Eberron. I'll bet the top five or so of those are absolutely fantastic! I'd love to see some development there greared specifically for 5E instead of (or in addition to) seeing rehashed/updated stuff.
