Instead of starting a new thread for every set of tools I create, I am going to use this thread from now on. I will continue to make updates to it as I create new tools.  Here is the complete set of tools I've created to date:

DM Tools:

Player Tools:

All of these tools are available at http://1-dot-encounter-planner.appspot.com/

Cheers!

--Leugren

EDIT: If there are any specific tables you'd like to see automated, please let me know.

Would it be at all possible to add the NPC generator onto the villain generator?

Loving it, by the way, I was actually going to sit down this morning and start working on a similar thing. Not anymore :D

At @Youngy's request, I have updated the villain generator to include all of the outputs of NPC generation so you don't have to hop back and forth between the two in order to generate a villain.

You're welcome, @Reius and @Akeisha.

For my next tool, I've been thinking about using the tables from the PHB to randomly generate personality traits, flaws, bonds, and ideals for a PC given a choice of background selected from a dropdown list.  Would that be useful to people?  I am open to any suggestions.  What random tables would you like to see automated??

What a great way to quickly generate some inspiration for running a game.

Hope you also put this info in the DM Help forum.

I just posted a PC Personality Generator which uses the background tables from the PHB in order to generate a set of personality traits.

It is directly available here, http://1-dot-encounter-planner.appspot.com/pc-personality-generator.html, though you can also access it from the main page.

I just posted a PC Point-Buy Calculator which automatically tracks your point-buy costs and imposes point-buy limits,  thereby allowing you to quickly experiment and compute different PC stat arrays.

It is directly available here, http://1-dot-encounter-planner.appspot.com/point-buy-calculator.html, though you can also access it from the main page.

I spotted and fixed a small bug with the way that remaining points were being calculated in the PC Point-Buy Calculator when the down arrows were being hit.  If you see this bug, just delete your browser cache and reload the page.

Is anyone using the PC Point-Buy Calculator?  I can't really tell by looking at my web analytics because it consists of a bunch of static resources that tend to get cached by peoples' browsers or by intermediary servers.

At any rate, if anyone is using it, would you say that it's fine as-is or could it use some modification?  I notice, for instance, that on lower-res screens, it's too big to see without a bit of scrolling.  Also, would it be helpful if I showed ability modifiers next to each ability score?  Your feedback is all I have to go on to improve these tools.

Thanks,

Leugren

Regarding the Point-Buy Calculator, I have some suggestions:

  • Switch the position of Wisdom and Intelligence so that they match the order of ability scores on the character sheet
  • Rename the "Mod." column as "racial" for clarity
  • If you are going to list the ability modifiers, that's where the "Mod." title would work, and that column would probably be best placed between "total" and "cost"
  • If it's feasible to do, move the "points available" box to the left and move "points remaining" to the space next to "points available" - that organization is more intuitive, in my opinion

I'm not sure if I would suggest making the tool overall smaller, as it being readable is about the only thing that concerns me - but making it the smallest size that is still easily readable from about 1 meter distance at a screen resolution of a typical monitor (which I unfortunately don't know, though in my household the common resolution is something like 1360 x 768, and anything that is at a different resolution is higher than that)

Keep up the fantastic work.

Great  stuff, Leugren! Thank you for all of this, you rock.

I agree with Aaron's suggestions on the point-buy calculator.

Also, could you do up the random dungeon creator? I was just looking at that and it seems really fun.

Heck, I'd appreciate automation of anything on either the DM's or player's side. It's all welcome.

Just so you know, I'll be using these tools this coming Monday in the game I'm running.

Thank you very much for the feedback, Aaron and Azzy.

Aaron: I will make all the changes you recommend, since all of your suggestions are excellent.

Azzy:  I'll try to do the random dungeon generation tables over the weekend.

Thanks again!  As any dev knows, it's really tough to put out good product without any feedback!

On a separate note, it was also nice to see that my work was noteworthy enough to warrant a small blurb within the daily news section out on the ENWorld site:

30 (or 1,030) Essential New D&D 5E Fan Resources!

Cheers,

Leugren

EDIT: Random dungeon generation is made a bit complicated by the need to maintain a model of the dungeon as it is being generated, for purposes of preventing overlaps as well as overflows. Also, to be really useful, the output should include a graphical map. I have therefore decided to defer this for now, but may try to tackle it in the future as time allows.

OK.  I just deployed a new version of the PC Attribute Point-Buy Calculator incorporating all of the suggestions made by Aaron.  If you see anything amiss, please let me know.

Cheers!

Leugren

EDIT: With respect to the low-screen resolution issue, I decided to just leave it alone.  People with lo-res screens can just hit Ctrl+Minus Sign to zoom out in most modern browsers.

Not satisfied with the Weather Generator provided by the DMG, I went ahead and created an "advanced" weather generator based on an article which appeared in Dragon #137.  It takes into account such factors as terrain type, whether it is an inland or a coastal region, the latitude, and the month of the year.  It uses these factors to randomly compute the daytime temperature, effective daytime temperature, effective nighttime temperature, precipitation (including fog), cloud cover, wind type, wind speed, wind effects, and wind direction.

I am currently running Lost Mines of Phandelver, so I am planning to use this tool to generate an entire month's worth of weather for the Neverwinter region. My main reason for doing this is that I have a wood elf in my party who is always asking about the weather because he is allowed to hide whenever there is fog, mist, rain, or snow.

In case you're interested, I set the latitude to around 60 degrees, and I'm using the Grassland and Coastal settings.  My campaign starts in the month of Marpenoth (October).

TIPS:

  • If you are running a homegrown campaign with your own calendar, just select the month which most closely matches the current season in your campaign.
  • Treat anything within 96 miles of an ocean or within 48 miles of a very large lake as Coastal.  Treat everything else as Inland.
  • Any location with a negative latitude is in the southern hemisphere, so the seasons and the weather which goes with them will generally be reversed.  A latitude of 90 degrees represents the North Pole.  A latitude of -90 degrees represents the South Pole.  A latitude of 0 degrees represents the Equator.

Leugren,

what at a wonderful contribution to the d and d community all around!  If my players find a lair, even one I did not anticipate, I can determine the cr, calculate treasure etc on the fly!  Yesterday, we spent forever writing down coppers we found etc but no more!  On my phone I have your tools bookmarked. I randomly determine treasure...."copy" put into a text and every player has it on their phone already detailed!

just one example of how you have helped to maximize the fun of others!  Many thanks,

That's awesome, @warpiglet.  I love the idea of running the treasure generator on a phone and then texting the results to your players!  It definitely saves on bookkeeping and I had not thought of it myself.  This is a labor of love for me obviously because it combines my vocation with my avocation.  I've been doing this sort of stuff for years, but this is the first time I've posted my tools to a public web site and made them accessible to others. I'm glad other people are finding them as useful as I do.

Really as busy working adults my group needs these sorts of tools.  Time saving things like this are the difference between being able to have 2 or only one session a month!

i am getting ready to take over dm duties and love the idea of generating wilderness monuments etc, treasure hordes etc and texting them to myself.  Later,I can send it to a program for printing and saving as a permanent record.  If the players tKe the same route, they might see the same monument.

Lastly, if I text them to myself first, I can later text the revealed portions to the players piecemeal as they come upon them.  It will save literally hours.  I also like the idea of sending to a word document that I can make noted on later on in pre prepped module form when possible

how cool is this?

I am planning my iniital 5E campaign. Used the tools above to generate 10 treasure hordes.  Have calculated all of my DCs for random encounters...have personalities for 12 NPCs...oh yeah, and random monuments and settlements already printed for use on the fly as needed!  The tools probably save me well over an hour of rolling and since they can be cut and pasted, and nothing has to be handwrtten since all of the above was saved in a word document!

In session, I will have my phone handy for individual treasure of creatures with the touch of a button.

Seriously people, use these tools and save yourself loads of hassle!

Someone asked me to create a small tool in which you to specify a CR, and it will automatically generate monster stats based on that CR using the same DMG table I used for the Quick Monster CR Calculator. Since I already had all the data, I was able to knock it out quite quickly.  It's available at the link provided below.

I have to say thanks for the tools again, Leugren.

Due in no small way to your tools, I'm already 60% of the way through my conversion of Rappan Athuk even though I've been only lazily working at it for an hour here or half-hour there between sessions over the last week (give or take a couple days... can't actually remember when I started).

I was even originally not going to do any monster creating - just grab something from the Monster Manual that was close-ish and call it good - but then you went and changed my mind with your recent CR calculation-related tools.

So thank you - and I'm sure my players would thank you too if they knew how much of the smoothing over the rough patches of my lazy conversion (prep-work and I are not good friends) your tools are responsible for.

I have resolved the problem and deployed a new version of the tool to the cloud.
