Seriously, they look worse than Mage Knight minis. The paint jobs look like they were done by a 3 year old.  What the heck happened?

I saw them at Bat Comics my Local B&M and they looked like the sculpters took lessons from my kindergartener. They are the type of quality I've come to expect from D&D minis. They suck!

I have to agree that the paint jobs on the pictures on websites selling singles look horrendous.  I disagree that they are of the same type of quality as earlier WOTC prepainted minis.  Those were not the best quality paint jobs, but many were decent for prepainted plastic minis, if not great, and their quality generally improved over the life of the line, until they took a dive again with the Encounters miniatures.  These new ones look definitely a whole step below even the Harbinger minis from the very first prepainted set WOTC did way back when.  I'm disappointed because the selection was good, and introduced novel concepts like having so many flying minis on flying stands.  But right now I'm struggling to convince myself to buy any of them.

Some context, like links to pictures, would be lovely, thanks.

Not the worst set of pre painted D&D minis, but certainly not the best.  Aint no desert of desolation, or war of the dragon queen, and don't get me started on deathknell, now that was a minis set.  Remember the warforged wizard?  The renegade warlock?  Now those were some minis.  Or wardrums... or abberations...  You know what, I'm having a hard time finding a D&D minis set that wouldn't blow this one out of the water.  The mind flayer is certainly among the least impressive takes on that monster we've seen out of a D&D minis set.  Certainly has nothing on the Lords of Madness version.

The saving grace are the flying dragons, but since they're all rares, and this box is rather pricey for only four models, I'd have a hard time justifying it.  Better to just pick up one or two off the secondary market.

The pics do look pretty bad on most of them, but to be fair it's hard to get a good idea on something like this from a pic.  These were made by the same people that did past editions of prepainted D&D minis, as well as the Pathfinder minis.

Ok but they're between TWO FIFTY AND FOUR BUCKS EACH.  Wtf are you expecting for less than 5 bucks?

If you want meticulously painted miniatures there are a bunch of guys out there who do bespoke work. It's not crazy expensive, either.

The miniatures are made by WizKids, who also make the Pathfinder Battles line of miniatures. The PFB line has generally been quite nice for their quality of miniatures, although the earlier minis were quite brittle - the harder plastic that was great for holding details wasn't so good for holding together!

It looks like the D&D line have a less extensive paint pallette than PFB, especially at the common level.

Pricewise, the two miniature lines have the same MSRP for a brick, according to the WizKids website.

Cheers!

Looks about the same to me. Old and new mini's never had great paint jobs. I have to issue with it, I just don't want them brittle and breaking.

Whether they look good or not I haven't really used miniatures in a long time. It's so expensive to get enough of each monster type, and then it's a royal pain to keep track of individual hitpoints when there is nothing to tell them apart.  I have a set of wooden laser etched tokens that are numbered and come sized for medium, large, huge, colossal, and gargantuan. Since they're numbered I just use a small dry erase board with the numbers and hitpoints written on it and it's so much easier to track combat. Unfortunately the company that made these tokens has vanished off the net, and nobody else that I have seen has thought of making something like this.

Edit:

Took a while, but was able to finally find a pic of them online.  This is set 1, there was a set 2 that added higher numbers.

is there no miniature nr 45?

Red Dragon is 44, Drizzt is 46, but nothing in between?

They don't look that bad but maybe not as good as some of the old 3.5 minis line circa Giants of Legends to Deathknell era. Maybe wardrums being generous.

I'm guessing number 45 is Batman. No, not that Batman. This Batman.

Are you sure that's batman?  Are you sure that's not a Michael Bay band incomprehensible pile of scrap metal...  er, I mean, transformer?

I got the starter set and was disappointed. They look fine, not great. The problem was the bases were warped so that the figs wobbled, and the Dwarven Cleric's left arm was detached from the body. I had to super glue it back in.

The second one looks like a plastic mini left too long in the paint stripper and got melted... and then someone who only had 2 minutes before they had to leave for their game threw paint at it.

But it still looks better than an unpainted mini even with a decent sculpt.
