Wow! The article format doesn't make me cringe to read it anymore. In fact they are top-notch now.

I still don't see an actual link to the pregen characters that are already hiding on their server. Are they intentionally keeping them "secret?"

I really appreciate the effort and time they are putting into updating their caretaking of D&D. It gives me great hope that D&D is in the best of hands.

Beyond that, there's on aspect I am curious about...

There's no tie-in to D&D Insider.  I've been a member for as long as it's been around. I am curious as to what direction us Insider subscribers will be taken as they move forward.

I notice wizards.com/dnd is still 'up'.  What becomes of that address?  Won't it cause confusion?

I ask because it confused me --for two days I wondered why the D&D site hadn't updated.  Glad I found this thread .

Oh, and I like the new layout.  I put up a Tyranny of Dragons wallpaper as my backround.  To celebrate -n- stuff .

Update:  the 'old' address is 404 now.

Hurry Hurry Hurry.  Download all your articles and issues of Dragon and Dungeon that you're missing if you're still an insider, before the old site goes BOOM!

I know that when my computer died on me last Spring, I lost everything.  EVERYTHING.  I thought I had to time to download them again.  Now's the time!!!!

It's odd that if you follow links to character sheets, you get the old playtest sheet as a graphic.

Too late.  I was working on downloading everything again, and in the middle of it, they killed my links, redirecting me to the new site. NOOOOOOOO WHY WOTC!!!!!

BIG EDIT:  As per the official twitter account, the tools and everything about the old website allows you to access the old 4e material here: http://archive.wizards.com/dnd/

EDIT 2:  The articles and magazines are broken links, but official WotC twitter tweeted me back, "I'll get that addressed."

I don't like it. It looks like something for a tablet/smart phone. Too many websites are going that route now, IMO.

I assume it will be debugged and finished in a few days, however.

I also assume you have to come here now to make any comments.

So on the one hand:  the new site is awesome.  Tons of new artworks and fluffy bits for many races and classes.  Get to see the races all standing next to each other too, which is pretty nice, since it's a bit hard to imagine how they'd look finally.  And while I like the direction, I really think Halflings look like another fey race here, and I'm not sure everyone will like that.

On the other hand: the archived version of the old site is having a lot of troubles: people are reporting problems logging in, and all of the magazine articles and issues are ending at 404 dead links.  The digital team told me via twitter that they're working on the later problem, though.

I think the new site is pretty nice... though I was visually sneak attacked by it because I didn't know it was going to be changing today.

And this new site actually works on my phone, rather than having an obnoxious loop where I punch in the web address and it sends me to a crippled mobile version, then I click a link that says "go to the full website" and it tries to load but trips the mobile browser sensor and sends me right back to the crippled mobile version.

Actually, I think it looks even better on my phone than it does on my PC - good show WotC.

It's a perfectly legitimate reason to not want to play a game because you don't like the art design in it, even if the game is fun otherwise.

Sore point much over a flippant comment?

The picture is a depication of a rotting corpse that's been sexualized for cheap titilation, as have other character pictures.   That's not a game I'm comfortable playing.   You don't like that I'm turned away by it?   So sorry, but I find that its not something I want in games I play.

I find myself agreeing with some of what you say. I just wish people should spend more time being offended by Cosmo and mainstream TV/movies and less about boobs on a lich in my favorite fantasy RPG. The other extreme where 115lb attractive females with size DD breasts run around demolishing gangs of 200lb men is just as unrealistic a image of what is feminine that completely ruins movies for me.

I wonder how many of the "defenders" on these forums listen to pop music or hip hop and have no problems with current sexist gangster cultures?

#53

Artifact

Jul 29, 2014 17:26:47

Serious question:  Wouldn't it be difficult to determine the lich is a female without breasts?  It's a static image, no voice, no movement.  I see a male, given all the other evidence.  What other ways might the artist bring out a female character?  I'm not an artist, so I'm curious.

Back on topic, I think the new site is great! But I generally use it to see the daily d&d articles and they're not readily featured.  So boo for that.

Off topic, Reasons why things that decompose are not decomposed #1 A lich needs his/her lips for their magical casting abilities.  Verbal components are quite difficult without lips.  Don't believe me?  Try to say "verbal" without your lips.  #2 I'm sure that whenever Valendra became a lich she altered the magic in the phylactry to keep her boobs pert and perky.  He probably even got a butt lift in the process.  She just rolled a 1 on her nose job.  #3 It's Magic! I don't have to explain @#$%.

Interesting web design, far better visually than before, but I don't understand why no link to the old stuff especially for subscribers who paid for access.  Yes I eventually found it in the forums, but still......

Also 5 minutes of browsing informed me on two seperate pages that Neverwinter releases in the year 2103, and that the premium OD&D boxed set is only MSRP $28.99.

One thing I dislike so far is that there are lovely images included for the monsters, classes, races, heroes, etc but when you click on them, it takes you to a text-based entry without the picture.

It's a definite improvement in design and content. There are a few oddities, typos, etc--such as those pointed out by pukunui. But the site is accessible and comprehensible to first-timers, which is critically important. I rate it a solid B.

Another miss for Wizards of the Coast on this new web site. It's way too busy visually. And what's with scrolling all the way to the bottom to get to the featured articles. It's a lot like the near-useless WPN site (and the other useless site that is http://dndadventurersleague.org/ ) - too much scrolling and clicking for not so helpful information.

The home page should be this: http://dnd.wizards.com/articles which is far from perfect, but better than the mess that is http://dnd.wizards.com/

It's a C- on my report card.
