Did they announce somewhere that we're getting Duergar?

Duergars use psionic powers, then if there are duergars then there will be some psionic power.

Or they could keep going with the current psionics workaround: psionics are treated as any other spell just removes the component requirements. This is how psionic abilities are handled by monsters in the Monster Manual currently.

Something similar to 4e's Revenant might be pretty cool.

Maybe the Derro companion for Sword Coast Legend means we'll see them as a race?

I’m drawing a blank on their name, but what was that ancient race of magic-infused humans that retreated to the Underdark in FR? I could see them showing up.

Cambions would be logical, but the trick would be making them feel distinctly different from the Tieflings – maybe using them as another winged race?

I allow nearly anything from older books and reasonable additions that befits the world we play in (Eberron currently). Duegar are a very easy conversion (just convert their abilities to listed spells instead of the highly OP monster manual description. Other older books in the past have also detailed a little about their society making it easier template them). They can either be 1/day or bound to the rest mechanic (not even sure why 1/day is listed when the rest mechanic can replace it. It just makes things strange ... e.g. Tiefling). Anything but the 4th edition is very easy to convert (and we don't refer to 4th at all anyway).

Duergar racial abilities in MM are described as magical to fit into current rules and FR as base game world. Eberron has psionics but to keep it's focus on official psionic lore I am treating Duergar in a similar way to Derro with diversity in magic, assassination and any spectrum of specialization most races offer. My character/npc is a lawful neutral Duergar Druid and making it far easier to socially/politically interact with at least some Dark Dwarf factions instead of seeing them simply as enemies.

I became used to Derro Dwarves being in games since Dragonlance and Eberron is also a perfect place for Duergar and as with any intelligent race there are always those who do not fall into the base stereotype of them simply being nothing more than an evil race. I am a big fan of giving intelligent npcs (hell even golbins  ) interesting personalities which differentiates them entirely from "kill for xp!" mobs. Making an npc fleshed out and alive as any player character helps create seamless interaction within the game instead of "player vs mob" mentality. Duergar simply become another race within the world when done right. In our old Dragonlance games political solutions were found even against Trolls (obviously Minatuars too in that world) where some campaigns simply treat them as mobs to be killed.

It is clearly evident that the spectrum of books printed in older editions will not repeat itself in 5e. They are valuable resources for both lore and concept and enough 5e details are out to make nearly any conversion rather straight forward. My most important factor though is ensuring lore backs it up and, as always, try to use existing rules to replace old rules with minimal to no house ruling on top of it when possible. I fully understand that not having access to such a spectrum of books is common. I inherited our collection that goes as far back as AD&D when one of our core (and closest friend) passed away a short while back. I consider myself the keeper of lore and certainly not the owner of it however. Concept never dies ... only the rules.
