Not enough talk about dragons.

Game title does end with "and dragons".

Here are some starter discussion questions.

Do you miss caster dragons?

Would you like to see dragons with class features in the future?

Would you like to see dragon based subclasses for more classes (dragon slayer ranger, oath of dragons paladin, way of the dragon monk, dragon pact warlock, dragonscarred fighter, circle of scales druid) in the future?

Are brown dragons that awesome?

New or returning kinds of dragons?

Yes to all from me by the way.
More dragons to kill and steal loot from!

Spellcasting dragons are an existing variant described in the MM. I like them as-is.

All my dragons are power casters in my settings.

I like Dragons as elemental and conecptual creatures. Perhaps even as the font of magic in my campaign world.

Dragon magic is, thus, closer to the "source" and is more pure than the diluted 'spells' utilized by lesser beings.

In my HotDQ, the opening scene is much more obvious in its origin. A lightning storm dominates the sky with ground strikes happening regularly. The blue dragon constantly crackles with barely contained energy. All spells that do Lightning damage are enhanced within a certain range of the dragon. Kobolds (little dragon worshipers) have their skin change color to match that of the dragon they follow when they are within a mile of the source.

Dragons should be like nothing else. They should be unique in their mechanics and their affect on the world around them.

Just this crusty old DM's view.

I like dragons as powerful forces of raw elemental and natural magic. Also l like the selfish loners thing D&D pushes where every dragon thinks themselves as the head of the world only surpassed by actual deities and antagonistic to every other dragon. So I could see some upstarts utilizing some humanoid tactics to off older more powerful dragons if the climate gets crowded. Maybe concentrating their magic into sorcery. Or a less intelligent white picking up a fighter subclass.

Just auto-assume "and dragons" to every thread title and we'll be in business.

I'm both a little dissapointed and a little inrigued by Shadow Dragons becoming a template.

Either bring bows or fight it in its lair.

Never fight a dragon in it's lair, bring bows and enough enlarge person potions to bulk up a small army.

My take on the 12 age categories (which I like) compared to 5e's four is that those four are supposed encompass the 12. "Ancient" isn't equivalent to Ancient on the 12 category system, but rather it represents something like the last few age categories. My rough approximations of what they are going for is something along the lines of the following.

Wyrmling

Wyrmling

Very Young

Young

Young

Juvenile

Adult

Young Adult

Adult

Mature Adult

Old

Ancient

Very Old

Ancient

Wyrm

Great Wyrm

The idea that they are intentionally holding back the other categories, and that Great Wyrm or Juvenile is going to show up in some other book, for instance, is unlikely in my estimation. Great Wyrms are Ancient in the new system. There is no reason you can't add HD and bump up stats if you want to indicate that this dragon is really ancient, of course. And if you need dragons that are in-between categories you can do the same thing with earlier categories. Even 3e did that.

The question for me is whether the listed stats should represent the middle of the category, or the beginning of the category.

Come to think of it, 5e dragons' breath weapons are no longer strictly "supernatural", rules-wise.

Looks like they can blow off antimagic field protected casters laughing, now.

Albeit the Large size of the field means that caster dragons still have problems using it for their own protection, though...

Bring a bow to fight a dragon?

How quaint. Crossbows is the answer

Or, y'know, that time in World of Warcraft I fricking harpooned one out of the sky in a half-giant ceremony
