In a recent games day at our local game shop, I was running part 2 of the Lost Mine of Phandelver... towards the end of the sessions I guess I had misread the "What the Redbrands Know" (pg.20) as the PCs were interrogating a Redbrand they had captured. Instead of reading "the lower part of the complex is guarded by a hidious "eye monster", I slipped that there was a one-eyed monster (Nothics have one eye right, according to the picture?) deep within the crevasse...
Without realizing what I said, my group errupted in laughter... then other groups around us started looking over as I was trying to justify that this was actually in the module. I even showed them the picture of the Nothic. The other group started laughing and it just chained on for several minutes as my players were going off about the one-eyed monster going into the crevasse and something about a Glasstaff, and the monster eating stuff in the crevasse and yeah, it did not end for quite some time.
By this point, the group already had cleared most of the Redbrand hideout and actually crossed the crevasse (room 8) but none had dared to jump down as it was filled with rotting flesh and stench. More so, the Nothic targeted the lowest INT character in the group and was bargained with him on several ocassions. So the group was familiar with the crevasse, they just didn't know a one-eyed monster liced down there till them... sigh.
Just wondering if anyone other group caught this really, umm, "interesting" reference in the module? Also wondered if the writers put it in there on purpose...
Our group still can't get over the fact that this was IN the Basic Module. But perhaps it was more my mis-reading of "What the Redbrand Knows" that triggered it. As a DM, usually I add a few flairs or what not to the general text provided, perhaps I had slipped and gone a bit too far on this one. Regardless, it ended up to be quite entertaining and the entire encounter with the Nothic (and whether the PCs should free it or kill it) ended up as a half hour morality debate... sigh.

| #3JohnLynchAug 26, 2014 1:21:09 | My players got lots of intel on the firebrand clan (as I've renamed them in transforming them into dwarves). Asked how many were in the clan, what traps there were. They forgot to ask what creatures the clan had at their disposal. Imagine their shock when they turn a corner and get a readied attack against them.
