In 5E since one can no longer spend money on magic items RAW anyway we have been doing some silly things with our coins. One of the PCs hired a pack gnome for 2gp a day to carry his stuff around a city. The charismatic PC went and spread rumours (being nobles) that pack gnomes were the latest in fashion crazes. Another PC spread rumors that all the cool kids dressed their pack gnomes up in the finest clothing.
I hired our pack Gnomes younger son to be a pack gnome but gave him a very cruisy jig. All he has to do is carry my healers kit around the city and I nicknamed him Nodwick. The original pack Gnome quit after he asked for a pay rise as his empoloyer wanted to take him into a dungeon. The PC thought he would just hire a new pack Gnome rather than pay 3gp per day.
However pack Gnomes have caught on kind of like the tulip craze and are in high demand atm and the cheapest you can hire a new pack Gnome is for 4gp a day now due to supply and demand. Someone spread rumours and started a pack Gnome craze.
In the campaign Gnomes are kind of 2nd class citizens in a humanocentric theocratic empire. Being a pack Gnome has however resulting in a dramtic rise in their quality of life. Other demihumans have been getting jealous though as pack Dwarves and Elves have not caught on and a gang of Halflings were caught disguising themselves as pack Gnomes which offended everyone as it is kind of like counterfit money. Today I think I will try and get the Gnomes into some sort of pack Gnome guild and franchise it throughout the Empire.
Pack Gnomes only 4gp a day. Get yours today!!!! Buy yoursfrom our guild and don't get caught out with cheaper halfling knock offs.

Gnomes have got a great potential, if i don´t like the canon background I can create one like I wish but the racial traits... if you don´t create a stealth or illusionist gnome PC you are wasting those. Maybe we need optional subraces for no-stealh nor spellcaster classes, for example swashbuckler, archivist (3.5 Heroes of horror), factotum...
You know, I've seen some people complaining that there's "nothing to do" with your money in the game since you can't buy magical items.
Well, there's no magical items in real life so I think I'll just leave my bank account number here and you folks can deposit all your money in it... since you have nothing to do with it anyway.

Don´t forget the gnomes are the best "pokemon trainers". If you see a steampunk mecha (=giant robot), maybe it was created by tinker gnomes. Animal companions are very common among gnomes. If there is a module about monster allies, monster "pets"...maybe we will see gnomes riding a bear or even an ogre.
* What about the springgans? The blues, the psionic goblin subrace could be an interesting antagonist for gnomes and halflings.
