#1 Alficles Aug 09, 2014 15:29:37	So, our LGS had pre-order pickups yesterday (Friday). Wizards has said that the PHB was all we would need to play, if we add the stuff they publish in the basic rules.   So... yesterday arrives, we all have shiny new books and I read through the basic rules and realize that Wizards hasn't updated anything! I asked around a bit online and all I heard was “go buy the starter kit and pick through it for monsters”.   What's the deal? Why are we having to cancel our gaming sessions (or at least, turn them into char building sessions instead) when we paid extra to support our LGS and get the books early. The's a vague goal of "sometime this weekend", although we're now well into the weekend and we still can't play the game we bought. You sold us the pieces to a board game, but no board.   (And while I'm whining... what's the deal with the rampant errors in the PHB? My group found several grammatical mistakes in their first reading and there are a number of rule... oddities to say the least. Dwarves get proficiency with "Throwing Hammers" which don't exist. Hand Crossbows are light weapons, which will be very useful to everybody wielding them in melee as improvised weapons, but not to anybody else, since you can't make a dual weapon attack with a ranged weapon. Level 1 characters /never/ regain their initial hit die because you get half your level, rounded down.   There's only 317 large pages... is complete perfection too much to ask? :P Ok probably, but we should at minimum be able to play the game when we buy the book.)
#2 Proletheus Aug 09, 2014 15:34:59	With the stuff in the PHB + currently available online tools you'll be able to play Hoard of the Dragon Queen and all kinds of adventures that involve the monsters that are in Hoard of the Dragon Queen (the last one even without owning it).
#3 souldoubt Aug 09, 2014 16:01:25	A selection of monsters and magic items are available free in the Hoard of the Dragon Queen pdf supplement:   http://media.wizards.com/2014/downloads/dnd/HoardDragonQueen_Supplement1.pdf   If you feel you need more than that to play the game, I don't know what to tell you.
#4 CVB Aug 09, 2014 16:03:22	Actually, the PHB has a few monsters in the back of the book, and Zombies can be adapted for other humanoids, just by stealing a power or two from the Player Races, altering stats and given them weapons and armour.

#6 mboss77 Aug 09, 2014 16:37:26	Monsters will be added to Basic early next week. Either Monday or Tuesday IIRC. Also, keep in mind that the PHB hasn't officially been released yet. That doesn't happen until the 19th. So, really they are getting this stuff out ahead of release schedule.

#8 Ghaliyah Aug 09, 2014 23:28:59	Apparently - at least from following twitter - it seems like they intended the Basic Rules update to go out on Friday but got caught by an error that left material out of Hoard of the Dragon Queen. So they pushed out a rules supplement for that including monsters and treasure needed for Hoard, but that put them behind on the Basic Rules update.
