We did get games inspired by some of the d&d lore and using some d&d names(like names of spells) but nothing like icewinter's dale, NWN, baldur's gate or NWN2. Games who within the limits of their real time enviroment truly follow the D&d rules, games with spell preparation, resting, d20 based combat and mostly authentic combat spells.
Maybe believed wizards that those games were outdate, BUT now is pillars of eternity selling very well. This games doesn't follow the d&d rules but it has a ruleset that is clearly inspired by them. It has borrowed many elements from D&D that modern d&d games have avoided like spell preparation. This game had a very limited crowd funded budget yet does it seems to be more popular then any D&D game since NWN2.
D&D5 seems to be perfect for this kind of game, it is not as complex as d&d3(endless layers of exceptions on exceptions are hard to program well) neither is it as grid and turn based as 4 th edition. Wizards believe in your own strenght and allow the creation of a game truly based on the D&D5 rules! |

They also recently released "enhanced editions" of the old Icewind Dale games. |

THere are already existing IPs out there that Im in love with that arent slowing down, dragonage one of them, kingdom hearts another, that i would pay 50-60 dollars for before grabing a dnd video game, espically since im playing in a weekly game. |

As such, I think that having a plethora of videogames to support your edition is the right way of doing things.

I still have really fond memories of the old Gold Box games, and occasionally load one up and play it.
And if you want to know how popular they still are, take a look at the most popular games over at Gog.com.
Sword Coast Legends, as I understand it, doesn't really use D&D rules.

| #14ZardnaarApr 12, 2015 17:30:04 | My first D&D experience was actually the Eye of the Beholder I and II games. My friend whose older brother played 1E explained what a beholder was. Eventually I found some old D&D books floating around and I read those which got me wanting to play. 2E probably had the best D&D video games from the Eye of the Beholder games through to Baldur's Gate and Torment. |
| #15pukunuiApr 12, 2015 18:48:18 | My first D&D video game experience was Dark Sun: Shattered Lands. Also an Al-Qadim game that came with it. Can't remember the name. I also can't remember if I discovered those games before or after my friends introduced me to AD&D 2e. It was probably around the same time. |

| #17IstborApr 13, 2015 7:36:22 | I am the opposite. I didn't know many of those games existed well after I was already playing D&D and by that time as well, those games were glaringly old.
I have trouble finding a VG that can properly slake my lust for D&D. Maybe one day... |
