I've finally got the results of my first play session on my blog here: https://nat20games.wordpress.com/2014/08/13/homegame-session-1-the-starter-set

Obviously beware: significant spoilers abound.

I was quite surprised at how 5th edition runs in actual play. It reads very close to 3rd edition but the subtle changes are significant. Elves getting dark vision, no charging rules and the difference between trained and untrained only being +2 made for a very different feel. This group also hasn't taken to grey hawking everything. They take reasonable amounts of treasure and that's about it. I don't know if this is just how each of them have played in the past (it's a new group) or if the lack of purchasable magic items has removed the motive for them, but it was fascinating to note. I'll be running another session in a few weeks so we'll see how they behave down the road.

Great report.  Thanks.

It seems like your players had a good time and they handled some of the encounters more easily than my group. (I skimmed past the Cragmaw Castle part since we haven't gotten there yet)

How long did it take (real time) to do all of what you reported?

Cheers.

We started around 10:00. Broke for lunch (30 mins?) and finished around 3:30 to 4:00.
