You want to play D&D. You've got yourself a Character, some dice, 3 heavy books, and you've sat down at your local gaming store. You don't know anyone but that's okay, nobody else seems to know each other anyway. As the Dungeon Master starts describing the scenario, you think; Cool, I'm into this. Then the DM looks up from their notes, right at you, and asks, "What do you do?"

All the talk about Battlemaster and Tactics.  After my long day at work.  Sometimes I really just want to smash.  I want to kick down the Freaking door, kill the bad guy, take his loot, and find a brothel.  Other days I want cool interaction with NPC's and a plot with a hook.  But nowhere do I want crunchy mechanics or combat strategery.  I'll leave strategy for the wizard, he thinks he's so smart anyway.

Yeah, "no defective adventurers is a Houserule at my table."

 

I tell people, "Even Batman has Hordon, Alfred, Robin, & Oracle. Wolverine has the X-men. And Lone Wolf has Cub. Make sure your adventurer has a place on the team, bc we will not be stopping to convince or pay your character to play the game."

I have meet so many people who thought they could just go buy the write books of amazon and ended up with 2-3 different editions and frustrated. I think if your going to claim 101 you should list the book by name.

There's thousands of pages of rules stuff. Everywhere. Almost nothing on the social anxiety of being put on the spot and fear of deciding wrong (in D&D). 

 

Personally I feel overcoming this part is more important than getting the rules right. 

 

But if you feel so strongly that I got this wrong, write a companion piece. Or do this right.
