According to this a CR1 monster should have between 71-85 hps. The CR1 monsters in the MM average mid twenties hp. Any help understanding this would be appreciated. I am converting some stuff from 3.5. |

The MM designers assigned Challenge ratings and attributes before they even knew what would constitute an easy or deadly encounter and their monsters don't exactly obey the later guidelines as a result. Any justification through reverse engineering is basically some arbitrary numerology. And to be fair, the DMG monster generation system isn't that reliable to begin with. DM heuristics will eventually be a better determing system for how dangerous or persistant monsters should be. Unfortunately that doesn't help you if you're running the system for the first time, sorry. |
