Princes of the Apocalypse Elemental Eye

I'm currently running a group through the PotA campaign and I noticed at the end of the adventure there's a little blurb about the Elder Elemental Eye going for round two (assuming the players don't all die). It also mentions the fact that no one is quite sure what the emelental eye actually is, and since I don't want the princes to be the end bosses (again), I thought of a way to make the Eye something much more devious for my campaign - what if it wasn't "round 2" but more a continuation of the Elder Eye's overall plan?

The Elder Elemental Eye is actually the remnant of an ancient primordial god, as rumored in the Princes of Elemental Evil section, similar to the way the Eye of Sauron worked in Lord of the Rings. Not only that, but it's also playing the characters, the prophets, and the Princes themselves. The four Princes were created when the ancient god was destroyed, each representing part of the god, and he's attempting to regain his power. He had the Drow build the underground lairs, caverns, the Fane, and the weapons the prophets found. The only problem with them was that none were powerful or willing enough to be able to destory any of the elemental princes, even with the weapons. He attempted to corrupt others throughout the ages, but they were either slain before they could be of any real use or ended up getting themselves killed after coming to command a cult.

So he played the long game and waited, eventually corrupting those who became the four prophets; but their true purpose wasn't to destroy, but rather create the cults and attempt to summon the princes, setting the stage for the players to grow in power - the players that he chose, manipulating events in their lives to lead them together and to him.

The players throw each weapon into its respective portal in order to prevent the Princes from coming to the material plane and causing untold destruction, but destroying the weapon in its respective plane unleashes a binding spell on each prince that ties each prince to the Eye and allows the Eye to absorb the prince instead of it simply being reborn in its native plane, even if the prince was already killed and the weapon was destroyed afterwards. The Elder Eye then begins reawakening it's power amongst the Drow, setting the stage for his rebirth.

  • If the players managed to kill all four princes and destroy the weapons, the Eye needs time to form and the players still encounter him as an end boss
  • If the players simply destroyed the weapons to close the portals, they have to fight and kill each prince

The Drow recreate the cults and immediately begin causing chaos, if only to gain the players attention. Hopefully, the players decide to take on this renewed threat, although if they need some convincing, the Eye sends its minions (who appear to be scared townsfolk or boisterous cultists) to call the players to action.

  • If they players destroyed each prince, they fight empowered Drow prophets - these are nearly as powerful as the princes since they Eye can now bless its followers with its power. Or a dragon of each color, representing the four elements. Up to you.
  • If the princes are still alive, the players fight the princes.

Either way, eventually they have to confront the Elder Eye, now an ancient primordial god as powerful as any other (like, say, Kord). The catch is that they must confront him in his native plane, and since he is essentially an elemental god his plane is a combination of the other four. Another issue the players have to deal with his how to kill him permanently - killing him normally just allows him to be reborn on his native plane after a while, and they should already know how well the last spell that broke him apart worked. The players have to come up with a way to imprison the Elder Eye god or absorb his powers after he dies so he can't be reborn. The Imprisonment or Wish spells would work nicely, though Wish works well for anything. At this point, the characters should be demigods themselves, so imprisoning the Eye in a gem and carrying that gem with them is one suggestion. Using Wish to make him a nice guy might also work. You never know.

This is more or less how I'm going to run it for my players when they eventually get there. If you have suggestions or alternate theories about the Eye or the Princes, I would love to hear them!

Hey man, cool idea, but I think you should see this if you weren't already aware http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Tharizdun. The real "man" behind the curtain in PoTA or so to speak.  Might give you more ideas.
