| #1JohnLynchNov 30, 2014 16:41:21 | A question for all of you lucky people who have the DMG already: What's the rarity of the magic items from the Starter Set?
Looking at the permanent magic items we have (based on the basic rules):
However that leaves the following items uncategorised: |
| #2RamzourDec 01, 2014 11:34:12 | A +1 weapon with a small enchantment (like Hew or Lightbringer) are probably Rare.
Source: Dragontooth Dagger in Rise of Tiamat is rare and has the following properties: +1 dagger, +1d6 acid damage on a hit, against enemies of the Cult of Dragon it is +2 and deals 2d6 acid instead.
So, as a rough guideline: +1 weapons = uncommon +1 weapon + enchantment = rare +2 weapon = rare
Also, since a +2 weapon is Rare, then the additional feature is roughly another +1. |
| #3Slyck314Dec 01, 2014 12:18:12 | DMG says +1 Rare +2 Very Rare +3 Legendary There is an encouragement to include a little enchantment and flavour with all of these. Even the "lowly" +1 weapons. |

| #5Slyck314Dec 01, 2014 12:25:07 | Hence the quotes. Every item should stand out and feel special. |

| #7Brock_LandersDec 01, 2014 12:34:51 | Whatever, you may have a +1 ring of protection, a +3 shield, shoes of flying, +2 mithral scale, and a +3 vorpal greatsword, or none of this. Why are people arguing against the fact that magic items are so seriously under DM purview in this edition, is is marvellous? |

| #11SillyMindDec 01, 2014 14:49:35 | Weapon: +1 uncommon, +2 rare or +3 very rare Armor: +1 rare, +2 very rare or +3 legendary Shield: +1 uncommon, +2 rare or +3 very rare
The thing that bugs me is that I cannot find the Adamantine weapons/ammunition... golems will be hard to kill without one. |

| #19ChaosmancerDec 01, 2014 20:07:20 | One thing that is kind of bugging me, and I wonder if someone has a solution for, is how wierdly everything is layed out in the magic item area.
I see multiple tables, labeled A-H I believe, with items on them. These tables are meant to corespond with the "treasure by level" tables to giv you an idea of what items are better at what levels.
Then all the items are listed alphabetically, and here is where they also list the rarity.
So is table A filled with low rarity items? Low power? I can't get the information sorted properly in my head and flipping between each table to find each rarity seems like way more work than I can do right now, but I don't want to just throw things in randomly before having an idea what the default system begins to look like. |
| #20GrazelDec 01, 2014 22:28:15 | The A-H tables is a throwback to the 1e random treasure tables and items aren't classified by rarity so much as 'theme' (note that some tables are mostly potions and other consumables). In 1e days a monster stat block would list what tables (by letter) to roll on for treasure. |

| #23Slyck314Dec 02, 2014 9:05:23 | Well, I think someone above confirmed that I had armours and weapons reversed. |
| #24GrazelDec 02, 2014 21:46:52 | DMG has this for rarities:
+1-3 weapon: Uncommon, Rare, Very Rare +1-3 shield: Uncommon, Rare, Very Rare +1-3 ammunition: Uncommon, Rare, Very Rare +1-3 armor: Rare, Very Rare, Legendary
DM Basic Rules v0.3 (latest): +1-3 weapon: Uncommon, Rare, Very Rare +1-3 shield: not listed +1-3 ammunition: not listed +1-3 armor: Rare, Very Rare, Legendary This means for weapons and armor (the only 2 that both have) the rarities are the same. V0.3 of the DM Basic rules was published Nov. 4, 2014. V0.2 had the same rarities. V0.1 had no rarities listed (just as the starter set has no rarities).
v1 of the Hoard and Rise supplements listed +1 armor as Rare as well, and +1 weapon as Uncommon (they don't have +2 or +3).
So all versions that have had a printed rarity has been consistent with only the Starter Set and v1 of the DM Basic Rules not listing any rarities. |
