| #1PhobosJan 04, 2015 15:05:09 | Is there an equavalent to read magic in this version, I searched but coudl not find one. In older versions, it was a given spell for all wizards and arcane casters, and how they read scrolls and studied spells. Just looking to confirm how this works now.
Also, identify, is this the current only way to determine a magic items "functional" properties? I also do not see anything similar to say spellcraft |

Read magic was a cantrip in the playtest that was removed before release because it was a requirement to take it so pointless to include. The need for read magic was removed for simplicity. Items can also be identified during a short rest just by experiment. The identity spell doesn't require a rest and also includes learning spells that might be affecting a creature or.

| #3pauldanielj2Jan 04, 2015 15:51:32 | I think the read magic spell is unnecessary now because, per the DMG, any creature that can read any written language can attempt to read a spell scroll (DMG 139). For identifying magic items, the identify spell, simple experimentation (sipping a potion, for example), or using the arcana skill (DM's discretion) would do it. |
