Really missing Dungeon and Dragon magazines...

With this new edition, I find myself REALLY missing the magazines. I want more material and there is none and don't believe the WOTC staff is in a position to give us any.

Are they announcing new products or even telling us what the plans are? Nope.

I think it was a mistake for them to suspend/cancel the digital versions of Dungeon and Dragon magazines and even bigger mistake to bring it in house.  I look back at my magazines when the game transitioned from AD&D to 3e and there the magazines were giving us material. Even the digital magazine, though rocky in the beginning, gave us something. Now though, nothing.

Hoard and Rise weren't even in house products. Is this the future of 5e? Half the product line up being developed by 3rd parties while the limit D&D staff struggles to put out main products?

I find it alarming that the DMG wasn't finished until recently and I'm worried this is the future of 5e.

While I do miss Dragon and Dungeon, I think their suspension was warranted. 4e was dead and they were doing a long playtest and were this focusing on a new edition. Mearls has said they are going away from the monthly release schedule. First because it was more desired by the fan base and it also reduced splat creep. Also the fact that the first 2 modules were 3rd party is really of no concern. Wizards constantly outsources their module writing. That's part of what made Paizo so great.

I miss just reading them. Old TSR era Dragon magazine had cartoons, articles about other RPGs, wargames, (and even those new-fangled computer games), and hilarious ads. Anyone remember the gigolo pimping crystal necklaces "of power" on the back covers?

The 4e digital versions were ok, but got shorter and shorter page counts...I didn't see much bloat, however. They added a few magic items, added a few themed feats, and added a few class AEDU powers for neglected classes (like the rune priest and the seeker). IMO, that's not bloat. Also, I recall being able to see the 4e Warforged, and the 4e Monk in playable form well before the hardcovers they were in came out. Dungeon was awesome for maps and adventures. That alone was great, especially for my (at the time) sandbox campaign. I loved having something to drop in when the PC's went off somewhere unexpected. Which was often.

I'm sure they'll be back in some form. But it'll be less content and cost us more money.

3rd party doesn't bother me in the least. Some of my favorite things throughout the history of D&D, and other games, has been homebrew, 3rd party, cannibalized from other games, etc.

Yeah, I'm missing them too.

I think they'll be back, at some point; but, given the stated intent to avoid monthly releases, I don't think they'll be monthly at first.

Hopefully, they'll return to a monthly issue format; once the licensing issues are hammered out and freelance writers can provide "official" material. I'd much rather see them focus on material that is considered "officially approved" for D&D, than have all their content be considered "official core" to D&D; with the occasional "official core" rules by the developers, perhaps as a quarterly column or section.
